All Engineering students must follow the sample curriculum designed for their program. However, students who wish to take additional courses outside their program requirements may take no more than 2 courses (total of 6 credits) outside of the core program in a given term. Students may classify these courses as "extra” (provided they choose this option at the time of registration before the add/drop deadline).
Students must notify studentrecords.engineering [at] mcgill.ca (Engineering Student Records) with their intent to code their course(s) as “extra” by filling out the Course Authorization Form after they have registered for the course(s, AND by the end of the Add/Drop deadline for the term in which they take the course. This option cannot be added to your record after the course change (add/drop) deadline. Students may include both courses in one form, or if undecided or pursuing extra courses in different terms, may submit a second form.
The course will be designated as "extra" ("RX" at the time of registration at the left of the transcript, and then once the grade is submitted, an "E" will display at the right of it on the transcript); the grade earned in the course appears on the student record, but it will not be included in your grade point average (GPA) calculation or credits. Extra courses do not affect registration status, e.g., if you are registered for 12 credits and mark a course(s) as “extra”, you remain a full-time student.
Typically, “extra” courses are courses taken for personal interest or potentially towards Graduate Studies at a later date, and will not be credited towards the undergraduate degree.
Please also note: courses classified as “extra” CANNOT be used towards Minor programs.
