We are pleased to announce the re-appointment of Dr. Howard Bergman as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine, 捆绑SM社区. Dr. Bergman has led the department through a period of expansion since 2012, including in its residency program, which is now the largest within the Faculty.

Dear colleagues,

Jon Salsberg will be leaving the Department of Family Medicine to take up a permanent position as Senior Lecturer (associate professor equivalent) in Primary Care, at the Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick, Ireland. Jon鈥檚 major task in the first couple years of this new appointment will be to create and launch an MSc/PhD program in public and patient involvement in primary care research.

Congratulations Dr. Alexandra de Pokomandy and Dr. Irina Kudrina on receiving the Lettre d'entente 250 from the F茅d茅ration des M茅decins Omnipraticiens du Qu茅bec. The award is meant to support the career development of family medicine researchers by promoting the development of health research in Quebec.

When Research and Graduate Program Director Dr. Gillian Bartlett-Esquilant, joined 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 Department of Family Medicine in 2005, primary care research in Canada was still in its infancy.聽Dr. Bartlett-Esquilant 鈥 who completed her PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at 捆绑SM社区 and her postdoctoral work at Universit茅 de Montr茅al 鈥 was brought in by then-Department Chair Martin Dawes specifically to help increase 捆绑SM社区 Family Medicine鈥檚 research capacity. 鈥淭he Department is now a leader in terms of primary care research,鈥 she says.

Soeur Monique, from the Hospital Santa Marcelina in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and alumni of the Department of Family Medicine, met with Dr. Bergevin, Dr. Juras, Dr. Connolly, Dr. Bergman, and Ms. Simmons on January 5th. The meeting covered a new partnership between the Department and Santa Marcelina鈥檚 new medical school. This partnership will include a version of the Blended Learning Education Program in Faculty Development, a new MSc.

Congratulations to Dr. Maxine Dumas-Pilon and Dr. Marion Dove on becoming Fellows of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). They were celebrated in a graduation ceremony at the end of the Family Medicine Forum (FMF), held in Vancouver, British Colombia this past November. Dr. Dove and Dumas-Pilon are pictured with Dr. Guillaume Charbonneau, the president-elect of the CFPC. Dr. Charbonneau will commence his presidency at the next FMF held in Montreal from November 8-11, 2017.

Congratulations to our PhD trainee, Ayat Salman, who is a co-author on a Nature publication based on her work for the liver disease biobank ().聽 Ayat鈥檚 PhD will draw directly on this experience to explore the necessary framework for a Primary Care Biobank with a focus on Obesity. Ayat has been award an FRQ-S PhD Scholarship and is supervised by Dr. Gillian Bartlett and Dr. Peter Metrakos.
