The President鈥檚 Prize for Outstanding Emerging Researchers

The Office of the Vice-President (Research and Innovation) created a new University-wide prize for outstanding emerging researchers in 2013 to encourage and celebrate our most outstanding early-career researchers.听

Justin Saulnier Wins the 2024-2025 Golden Violin Award Competition

Congratulations to violinist Justin Saulnier for winning the 2024-2025 Golden Violin Award competition! Justin will receive a generous scholarship of $30,000 in addition to a 14-karat gold lapel pin in the miniature form of the Golden Violin. In addition, he has been awarded the opportunity to perform a recital at the Canadian Centre for Architecture as part of the Schulich @ Bon-Pasteur series on February 26, 2025.听

Professor John Mac Master wins the 2024 VERA Award

John Mac Master, esteemed Canadian tenor and Associate Professor of Voice at the Schulich School of Music, is a 2024 recipient of the Voice Education Research Awareness (VERA) Award. This prestigious award is given annually by The Voice Foundation to honour distinguished individuals for their leadership, commitment to education and mentorship, and modeling of voice use and its advancement. Established in 2017, this national competition recognizes works for chamber music formations with piano that show significant potential to engage audiences and become standard repertoire.

Making strategic assets available to pension funds would encourage more domestic investment

Canadian pension funds have a mandate to deliver steady pension payments to millions of plan members, writes Professor Sebastien Betermier in Benefits Canada. But that鈥檚 easier said than done, and the most cost-efficient way to deliver is by investing in a globally diversified portfolio tilted toward strategic assets. This type of asset, however, isn鈥檛 available in Canada, so pension funds look for them elsewhere.

US expansion plans head south for Quebec鈥檚 Autobus Lion

In 2023, the Quebec electric vehicle maker Autobus Lion opened a $150 million truck manufacturing facility in Illinois, but its expansion into the United States has not gone according to plan. Much of its 900,000 square foot facility sits empty, and the company is sub-leasing the space. Now, the company is on the brink of bankruptcy and working with investors to determine if it can be salvaged.

鈥榃elcome tax鈥� helps Quebec cities generate their own revenue

In 2022, Quebec鈥檚 so-called 鈥榳elcome tax鈥� generated more than $1.4 billion for municipalities, with Montreal alone pulling in more than $410 million. Though it sounds like a penalty for new arrivals, its name is actually derived from former Quebec cabinet member Jean Bienvenue, who tabled the bill proposing the tax; Bienvenue鈥檚 surname translates into English as 鈥榳elcome鈥�. These municipal-level real estate transfer taxes can range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars, and property buyers must pay within 30 days of closing their purchase.

MIPC 2024: Students tackle global finance challenges with innovation and leadership

The 捆绑SM社区 International Portfolio Challenge (MIPC) 2024 was held in November and drew a record 99 teams from 47 universities across 17 countries, cementing its reputation as a premier global finance competition. This year鈥檚 focus on building inclusive retirement systems for gig workers and those facing income uncertainty sparked innovative solutions from participants. A standout addition was the inaugural Women in Buy-Side Panel, addressing gender disparities in finance.

A passion for food: Interview with Marie-Line Beauchamp, COO of MTY Canada

捆绑SM社区 alumna Marie-Line Beauchamp, BSc(FSc)鈥�82, has worked her entire life in the food industry, where she has held various management positions, including as Executive Vice President of Sodexo Canada and President of R么tisseries St-Hubert. Since 2018, she has been the Chief Operating Officer of MTY Canada, where she oversees, among other things, the 1,106 restaurants that the group operates in Quebec.

La Presse interviewed Beauchamp about her current role at MTY, her illustrious career, and the CHUM Foundation, where she serves as President.
