The Schulich School of Music鈥檚 Kelly Rice recently met with pianist and music teacher Catherine Steele (n茅e Thornhill) to discuss her life in music, beginning with her childhood in Newfoundland. 聽
She is the inspiration behind the Catherine Thornhill Steele Visiting Artist Fund, created by Seymour Schulich in 2005 to honour her.

A new Canada-wide Music Composition Competition
The Schulich School of Music enthusiastically announces the establishment of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers, open to all Canadian composers under 35 years old.聽聽The school will host the first edition of the competition in 2017, thanks to generous support from Dr. Graham Sommer, M.D. C.M. 鈥72. 聽

Since she became part of the faculty of the Schulich School of Music in 1992, ten of Professor Marina聽Mdivani鈥檚 students have won the 捆绑SM社区 Concerto Competition. The most recent of these, Anna Peletsis, shares an interesting parallel with Mdivani鈥檚 past 鈥 both attended the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and eventually relocated to Canada.
Zhenni Li wins Second Prize at the International Edvard Grieg Competition
Schulich School of Music Doctoral聽piano student Zhenni Li 聽has won Second Prize in the 15th Annual International Edvard Grieg Competition which was held September 2-10 in Bergen, Norway.聽聽In addition to the 20,000 euro second prize, Ms. Li was also awarded the 1000 euro Orchestra Prize. 聽Ms. Li is a student of Prof. St茅phane Lemelin.
Jeremy Cox named Schulich Distinguished Visiting Chair
Jeremy Cox has been named 2016-2017 Schulich Distinguished Visiting Chair in Music. He brings to the school an expertise that spans performance, scholarship, teaching, academic leadership, and curriculum design.聽 Prof. Cox will be involved in many aspects of school life this year, including teaching, conference organization, academic review, and writing.
Rolston String Quartet wins the 2016 edition of the Banff International String Quartet Competition
We wish to congratulate this year鈥檚 winners of the 2016 edition of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Rolston String Quartet. Formed in 2013 by Luri Lee and Jeffrey Dyrda (BMus聽2009) on聽violin, Hezekiah Leung on聽viola聽and Jonathan Lo on聽cello, this Canadian string quartet is currently the graduate Quartet-in-Residence at Rice University鈥檚 Shepard School of Music.

MISQA (捆绑SM社区 International String Quartet Academy) was founded in 2010 by Mrs. Constance Pathy. Since its inception, Prof. Andr茅 J. Roy has assumed its leadership as per his position of general & artistic director. Each year, the academy invites the most significant practitioners of the genre to share their experience with and to educate some of the worlds most promising young quartets; four senior quartets and four junior quartets are selected every year.
