Looking Down鈥揜eaching Out: The University in the 21st Century听

CURAC members joined their MURA colleagues for a virtual discussion between Henry Mintzberg, Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies, and his daughter Susan Mintzberg, 捆绑SM社区 PhD candidate, Social Work. Henry and Susan, from two fields (management and social work), in two roles (faculty and doctoral candidate), and as two generations (father and daughter), contrasted two perspectives of the contemporary university: looking down from the Ivory Tower and reaching out like an octopus. The four aspects discussed were: teaching, research, dissemination, and organization.听 The presentation was followed by a very interesting discussion with attendees from across Canada.

I Medici di 捆绑SM社区 launched its 32nd Season with a virtual concert on YouTube. MURA was honoured to co-sponsor this event that is dedicated to our colleagues and students engaged in research and patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic as members of the 捆绑SM社区 Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity (MI4), and their patients.

A conversation with Dr. Don Sheppard Founding Director of MI4, on 鈥淐OVID-19: where are we now, and where are we going?" was followed by the music of JS Bach, A Vivaldi, C Debussy, with soloists Kyoko Hashimoto, Qian Li, Jonathan Oldengarm, Michelle Taillefer and Emmanuel Vukovich. .

Twenty-two MURA members had the immense pleasure of attending the Imagine Van Gogh Exhibition at the Arsenal Contemporary Art Montreal. It was a unique cultural event where technology is at the service of art through more听than 200 works by Van Gogh.听Imagine Van Gogh, designed by Annabelle Mauger and Julien Baron, is a direct continuation of Albert Pl茅cy鈥檚 concept of the 鈥淚mage Totale鈥. 听Selected paintings from the Arles period in 1888, sky and sun, landscapes, urban and rural backdrops, villagers, peasants, still听life听 along with the miseries and joys of humanity are all depicted in turn, colouring the canvas under the discerning eye of an artist contemplating the turn of the century.

Thirty members attended MURA's 4th Benefits Information Session for a presentation by the new HR Benefits Manager and Advisor, H茅l猫ne Paquette, CRHA. The topics included health, emergency out-of-country/provincial medical insurance, dental, and basic and optional life insurance. The Q&A was moderated by Board Member, Kathy Mayhew, who also provided a wealth of information concerning the overall medical coverage.

Taxation Seminar

Fifty MURA members attended a Taxation Seminar that was led by two experts from Richardson GMP in Tax & Estate Planning. An hour-long presentation on various issues of interest and concern for seniors was followed by a Q & A where numerous questions were raised on taking advantage of taxation benefits as pensioners and ensuring optimum planning for the benefit of legal heirs.听 听听

Twenty MURA members attended the play Alice and the World We Live In by award-winning author Alexandria Haber at the Centaur Theatre. Supported by two talented actors, Jane Wheeler and Daniel Brochu, the play examines the aftermath of a terrorist attack through two parallel stories and the anxiety of experiencing the loss of loved ones.

Sixteen MURA members joined a group from the retiree association of the Universit茅 de Montr茅al (Apr猫s l'Um) for a delightful wine tasting, meal and tour of the vineyard and sculpture garden at the Domaine des C么tes d鈥橝rdoise Dunham in the Eastern Townships. At MURA's 4th AGM on June 20th, members heard presentations by the president on the many ways that our association has been "Strengthening its roots in the 捆绑SM社区 Community" and "Expanding its Reach Beyond." The Vice President (Internal) spoke about the participation at this year鈥檚 events and the results of a member survey concerning event preferences.

There was an update on membership by former category of employment by the Vice President (External). The members also voted on the 2018-19 financial review, the annual fee for members, and the budget for 2019-20. As requested during the session, the treasurer will send a more detailed breakdown of the MURA expenses.

The Principal then gave a most inspiring speech on this year鈥檚 breakthroughs at 捆绑SM社区 and shared with us a vision of the future for 捆绑SM社区's Third Century that was followed by a general discussion with the members. The AGM concluded with a wonderful occasion for members to chat and mingle with old friends and colleagues while enjoying delicious nibbles and drinks. View photos

Twenty members had the pleasure of听 a walking tour of the Saint-Henri district.听 Tour guide and lifelong resident, Guy Giasson, provided fascinating information about the area portrayed in Gabrielle Roy's famous and well-acclaimed novel听The Tin Flute听that was a recent choice of the MURA bookclub.听The tour was followed by a wonderful lunch at the beautiful L'Ambroisie restaurant located near the Lachine Canel. Guy is also President of the Soci茅t茅 historique de Saint-Henri听()听that offers these tours and has rotating displays on the history of St. Henri. (View photos)

Over 30 MAUT-RS and MURA members attended the annual spring luncheon/lecture at Macdonald Campus. The speaker was Professor Daiva E. Nielsen, from the 捆绑SM社区 School of Human Nutrition. Her fascinating talk was about genetic variation affects response to diet and indicators of health. The overall goal of her research program is to design genetically-tailored lifestyle interventions to prevent chronic diseases.

Over 50 MAUT-RS and MURA members enjoyed a very informative and enlightening talk by Doina Precup, one of 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 stars in artificial intelligence (AI). Head of ,听owned by Google, Prof. Precup of the School of Computer Science, spoke about her fundamental research on reinforcement learning 听and about AI applications in areas such as health care. At MURA鈥檚 second annual Pension Investment Round-Table that was held in the Billiard Room of the Faculty Club, five speakers presented their chosen investment strategy. An open discussion followed between the speakers and the 45 members present ranging from investing either with a small or large firm, selecting the right annuity, opting for the 捆绑SM社区 Group Life Income Fund (LIF), being a hands-on investor, to having a hedge against market risk. A most informative afternoon for all.
