The À¦°óSMÉçÇø Psychoeducational and Counselling Clinic is a teaching and training unit of the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology within À¦°óSMÉçÇø’s Faculty of Education.
Through its training activities, the clinic provides low-cost psychological services to people seeking psychoeducational assessments or counselling.
Clinic Overview
Used primarily by Master’s and Doctoral students as well as academic staff from the Department’s two accredited psychology programs (Counselling Psychology and School/Applied Child Psychology), the Clinic serves to provide an on-campus setting for students’ clinical training and research. All services are provided under the supervision of qualified and accredited professors from the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology.
The Clinic is comprised of several private offices that allow for supervision, a waiting room, and a trainee office.
Open to the greater Montreal community, the Clinic offers supervised assessment and counselling services for clients who may have been referred by schools, non-profit/government agencies, or by professionals including psychologists, social workers, counsellors, and physicians. Clients may also contact the clinic directly and make a self-referral for psychoeducational assessments or counselling services.

Services Offered
Psychoeducational Assessments:
A psychoeducational assessment is a one-on-one in-person session where a variety of tools are used to develop a complete perspective of the client’s academic skills and cognitive abilities. Note that virtual sessions are not offered nor are evening and weekend sessions. Please see the Schedule tab for more details.

Language of Service: Assessments are generally administered in English and all assessment reports are written in English. Please note that the Clinic does not currently offer psychoeducational assessments for students who primarily study in French or who require a report to be written in French.

Counselling and Psychotherapy:
This service is a kind of talk therapy, to help clients work through emotional or mental difficulties in a safe, confidential environment.
Accepted Clientele: Adults aged 18+ experiencing social or interpersonal issues

- Assessments for autism spectrum disorder
- Adult ADHD assessments/evaluations
- Vocational/career assessments to children or adolescents
- Counselling and psychotherapy for children/teens
- IVAC/CNESST/SAAQ mandates or any mandates including third-party payments
- Psycholegal expertise and court-mandated services
- Neuropsychological and formal assessments for neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorders)
- Formal vocational/career assessment or testing
- Letters for gender-affirmative care
- Severe mental disorders and disorders requiring long-term services (e.g., psychotic disorders, personality disorders, complex trauma, severe substance misuse, bipolar disorder)
- Urgent/crisis mental health services (e.g., severe suicidality, presence of hallucinations or delirium)
Schedule & Acceptance of New Clients
Clients are accepted when the waitlist is open and potential clients are triaged by licensed psychologists. Due to high demand, and the specific constraints of the practicum programs, only a limited number of clients can be seen each year.
Sessions are in-person only. Note that virtual sessions are not offered nor are evening and weekend sessions. The Clinic operates only during À¦°óSMÉçÇø’s Fall and Winter semesters (September - April) weekdays, during the hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you are looking for other Montreal-area services that fall outside of our clinic schedule, we may be able to provide a referral.

Who can request a service?
Requests for children aged 4-13 must be made by a parent or legal guardian.
Individuals aged 14 and older can register themselves for the waitlist. Alternatively, parents or guardians can complete the online waitlist registration; however, the potential client must undergo the initial screening call and provide consent to the psychoeducational assessment.
What information do I need to provide when requesting a service?
The following information is needed to complete the intake form:
- Type of service being requested (psychoeducational assessment or counselling)
- Basic contact information including email and preferred phone number.
- Client identification (e.g. name, age, gender, pronouns, language)
- Parental information (if applicable)
- Referral source (if applicable)
What are the next steps after the intake form is submitted?
As a potential client, you will be placed on the appropriate Clinic waiting list. Please be aware that the waiting period can be an average of 12 months and that on rare occasions the Clinic may suspend taking on additional prospective clients if the waitlist reaches its maximum.
When services become available, potential clients will be contacted by a Clinic Coordinator who will conduct the first screening call. A second screening call will be done by a Clinic trainee to determine whether the Clinic's resources are suited to the client's requests. A first meeting is usually made at that time. Please note that the waitlist time between initial contact and the first meeting can sometimes be lengthy.
What happens if I need more urgent services?
If services are urgently required, Clinic staff may able to provide suitable referrals. When a client requires services that are not available in the Clinic, a referral to an appropriate service is usually made.

The Clinic is not equipped to handle emergency crises. In case of emergencies, please call 9-1-1 or Suicide Action Montreal at 514.723.4000.
Fee Schedule & Receipts
Clients are charged fees for services rendered. The Fee Schedule is as follows:
Psychoeducational Assessment: Fees are on a sliding scale fromÌý$200.00 to $1,800.00, collected in two installments. The first installment of half the fee is collected at the end of the first assessment session. The second half is collected at the final assessment session.
Counselling Fees: Fees are set on a sliding scale fromÌý$20.00 to $80.00Ìýper session. The fee is collected at the beginning of each session.
Forms of payment: Debit or credit card only, paid by terminal onsite at the Clinic.

Receipts and Insurance Claims:
Invoices are emailed to clients using the emails on file via the Clinic's OwlPractice software. A printed receipt is provided for every payment. As the À¦°óSMÉçÇø Psychoeducational and Counselling Clinic is a training facility, depending on each individual client's insurance plan, trainee services may or may not be considered an eligible insurance claim. Potential clients are encouraged to check with their insurance provider prior to the initial appointment.
If you are accepted as a client and require a reduced fee, you may request a fee assessment during your secondary phone screening with your assigned trainee. Please note in this case, you will be required to submit proof of income, such as provincial or federal notice of assessment from the previous year's income tax. All fee assessment applications are reviewed by the Clinic Director.

Clinic policy on completion of Disability Tax Credit Certificate (T2201):
Due to time-sensitive nature of clinical work, our clinical staff are only able to complete the Canada Revenue Agency’s Disability Tax Credit Certificate (T2201) for current/active clients. Form completion is not done on the spot during your appointment; this process may take up to four weeks. Please consult with your psychologist-in-training to request the completion of a Disability Tax Credit Certificate (T2201). All clients who have terminated services with the Clinic should contact their primary care physician for completion of form T2201, as primary care providers are typically in the best position to be aware of the client’s overall current health status. Clients who do not have a primary care physician should contact their local CLSC. The clinic can send a copy of the client’s psychoeducational report (assessment clients) or termination report (counselling clients) to the CLSC or primary care physician for their review.

Clinic Location, Transit & Parking
The Clinic is located in B179, on the basement level (B1) of the À¦°óSMÉçÇø Education Building at 3700 rue McTavish. There are three building entrances: McTavish, Peel, and through a pathway just north of the building.

Driving: Note that this section of McTavish is accessed by driving east on Dr. Penfield and turning left up McTavish Street. (The lower portion of McTavish is restricted to pedestrian traffic.)

Parking: Free or metred parking in the surrounding streets is available but highly unpredictable. Underground parking may available in the Education Building Garage (3700 rue McTavish); standard fees apply. Clinic Advisory Committee
The role of the Clinic Advisory Committee (CAC) is to assist the Clinic Director in matters of policy and procedures relative to the operations of the À¦°óSMÉçÇø Psychoeducational and Counselling Clinic. Clinic policies and procedures are set by the Director in conjunction with the CAC. The advisory committee also vets projected clinic expenses.
The Clinic Advisory Committee is comprised of:
- Two academic staff representatives from the À¦°óSMÉçÇø Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology Department’s Counselling Psychology and School/Applied Psychology programs
- Four student representatives
- Clinic Director
- Clinic Supervisor and Coordinators
Students registered in courses that use the clinic may bring up concerns, requests, or problems to their respective student representatives or directly to the Clinic Director for discussion at advisory meetings. Students may, with prior notice, also attend meetings. The advisory group convenes two to four times a year.
