3D Printing Services

General

Bambu Lab X1 Carbon
Printable volume (WxDxH): 256 x 256 x 256 mm鲁
Nozzle diameter: 0.4 mm

Software setup

Bambu Studio is required for the 3D print requests, since we need .3mf to be able to start the print job. If you want to create a model from scratch you can use Blender, TinkerCAD or any other modeling software and then export it to .stl before processing it into .3mf in Bambu Studio. Alternatively, you can download a model from a trusted 3D repository, like Thingiverse.听

  1. Download from ECE SharePoint
  2. Run the execution file and follow the installation steps displayed on the screen
  3. After the setup the complete, launch Bambu Studio and run "Getting Started" setup
  4. Select the following options:
    • Region: North America
    • Printer: Clear all and select Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 0.4 mm nozzle
    • Filament: Clear all and select PLA, ABS, PETG and TPU as filaments and听Generic as Vendors. Select every filament except High Speed and Silk (Do not click Select all then untick the ones you do not need as the software will select all, not just the ones you filtered. Just tick the ones you need)
    • Do NOT Install Bambu Network plug-in
  5. Add the filaments to the list (types and color are available in the section below)
  6. All other setting should be left as is, unless there are some quality settings that you know you want to use (layer height, infill %, supports and so on)
  7. Here is a quick on how to use the software.

Filaments

PLA (Black)
The most common 3D printing material. It is easiest to print with, so it is likely to print without any defects. It is tough, but brittle. It is not very resistant to heat, chemicals or water, but odorless and biodegradable.

PETG (Red)
Another common 3D printing material. It is humidity and chemical resistant, food safe but not biodegradable. It is recyclable under code 7 (other plastics).

TPU (Transparent)
A more purposed 3D printing material that is used for flexible parts. It is stretchable and impact resistant.

ABS+ (Silver)
A 3D printing material used for mechanical parts. It is tougher and more durable than other materials. It is also impact resistant, but the caution must be taken when used in high temperature environments as the plastic fumes are toxic.

Eligibility

We can ONLY 3D print parts for lab or course work. NOT for research.

Process

  1. Students can request 3D printing by sending the request form above to 3d.ece [at] mcgill.ca.听The email must be sent from their 捆绑SM社区 email and it should include the following:
    • YourName replaced with your first name in the file name
    • Course/Lab name in the title
    • Course professor, instructor听or TA in the CC field for approval
    • Completed the request form
    • .3mf file with the sliced model
    • Any other details related to the print
Shortly after you complete and send the email, you鈥檒l receive a response via email
  2. The request email must be followed by an approval email from of the Professor/Instructors/TAs before we can start the print job
  3. After that you will receive another email with the expected completion date
  4. Then the staff will analyze/print the file(s) then inform students when the part is ready for pick up.

Time and pickup location

Location for pick up: Room 4140 (counter) in Trottier Building听

Time of pickup: Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm, except holidays.

Note that printed jobs not picked up within 2 weeks from the date of the notification email may be discarded.
