In memoriam: Abraham Fuks
Abraham Fuks, (BSc'68, 捆绑SM社区; MDCM'70, 捆绑SM社区), Former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, 捆绑SM社区 graduate.
After training in Internal Medicine and Clinical Immunology in the 捆绑SM社区 teaching hospital network, he took three years of postdoctoral training in immunogenetics and histocompatibility antigens at Harvard University.
Fuks' research interests included the immunogenetics of diabetes, the biology of tumour-associated antigens and cell adhesion molecules, and ethical aspects of human clinical trial design.
He had an ongoing scholarly interest in the language of medicine and its metaphoric structure, and was a professor in the departments of Medicine, Pathology and Oncology at 捆绑SM社区. He was a professor and was actively involved in the design, content, and also delivery of the IMHL program.

He holds a research professorship on organizational models and social impact. Professor Barin Cruz has worked in projects supported by the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB), the Government of Quebec, Desjardins International Development, among several others.
He currently serves as a board member at the Maison de l鈥檌nnovation social 鈥 MIS, an organization that aims at reinforcing the managerial capabilities of social enterprises in Quebec. Dr. Khalid Aziz, MBBS, BA, MA, Med(IT), FRCPC is Professor of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and Medical Director (Quality Improvement) in the Office of Lifelong Learning at University of Alberta, Edmonton Alberta. He is also a staff neonatologist in the Edmonton Neonatal Program and Stollery Children鈥檚 Hospital, Edmonton since 2007.

He is a graduate of Guy鈥檚 Hospital Medical School, London University and received his BA Hons and MA in Neurophysiology from Cambridge University. He completed his Family Practice training in the United Kingdom before training in Pediatrics in Harrow and Oxford, England. He completed his training as a neonatologist in Edmonton, Alberta and subsequently worked as a general pediatrician in Lethbridge, Alberta. From 1996-2007, he was a neonatologist at the Janeway Children鈥檚 Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John鈥檚, Newfoundland and Labrador, on faculty at Memorial University (where he received his MEd (Information Technology).
Dr. Aziz鈥檚 academic interests lie in interprofessional medical education and knowledge translation. He is editor of the EPIQ quality improvement workshop for Canadian NICUs and is a member of the Canadian Neonatal Network Governing Board (a research network) and the Canadian Neonatal Foundation Board (a registered Canadian charity). He is a past member of the Neonatal Task Force of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation and a member (Past Chair) of the Neonatal Life Support Writing Group of the American Heart Association 鈥 both these organizations develop and disseminate neonatal resuscitation science internationally.
He is married to Carolyn, a retired family practitioner, and they have 4 children and one new grandchild. He has lived and studied in Africa, Europe, and Canada. Travelling is his passion, and he has volunteered for perinatal projects in China, India, and Ethiopia. He was a SCUBA instructor in a past life and is now a ski instructor. In summer he spends time falling off his mountain bike.
John Breitner
Geriatric psychiatrist and epidemiologist
John Breitner is a geriatric psychiatrist and epidemiologist who has devoted his career to Alzheimer鈥檚 disease (AD), its risk factors and their implications for its prevention. He has worked extensively in diagnosis and treatment of patients with dementia but is better known as a researcher.

His work began with studies on familial aggregation in AD and evolved to twin studies of heritability and environmental risk factors. He then founded the Cache County Study of Memory in Aging, a longitudinal investigation of genetic and environmental antecedents of AD, which has produced over 100 scientific papers. He was Chair of the Alzheimer鈥檚 Disease Anti-inflammatory Prevention Trial (ADAPT), a randomized controlled trial to evaluate nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as agents for the primary prevention of AD in healthy elderly people, and INTREPAD, a similar trial among healthy elderly at high risk
John's research included the investigation of the possible effects of these drugs on the earliest signs of the disease. In 2010 he joined the 捆绑SM社区 faculty as Director of the new Centre for Studies on Prevention of AD (StoP-AD) at the Douglas Mental Health Research Institute. The Centre is devoted to identification and quantitation of markers of AD in its pre-symptomatic stage, and to preliminary testing of experimental strategies for their capacity to prevent progression of the disease toward the symptomatic illness.
Prof. Breitner has authored over 200 publications and is known as an outstanding teacher. He has mentored more than 20 doctoral and post-doctoral students who have gone on to hold full-time academic appointments.

Re-shaping healthcare systems is both complex and emotive work. Andy鈥檚 approach enables leaders to gain insights into the way systems function, and to apply these insights to new ways of thinking and working together. Andy leverages a range of tools and qualifications in support of this work - including Systems Thinking, Systemic Constellations, and the iEQ9 psychometric profiling tool. He also incorporates mindfulness practices, guided by his Black Belt in TaeKwonDo and PADI Rescue Diver qualifications.
More broadly, Andy works extensively with Boston Consulting Group, supporting Managing Directors and Partners to build more Psychologically Safe operating environments for their people. He is also consulting on a major new initiative to re-think how Youth Criminal Justice is delivered in the UK.
In 2018 Andy took time off work and moved to South Africa to spend 18 months volunteering with global not-for-profit organisation Oasis. He worked with marginalised youth, delivering employability training and contributing to the development of a pioneering programme to fast-track young black South Africans into the teaching profession.
Prior to this, Andy was the first facilitator to join the Forward Institute, a highly regarded non-profit institute enabling senior leaders to explore and engage with issues of responsible leadership within their own organisations. He also partnered with Olympic Gold Medallist Michael Johnson to establish a Young Leaders programme for highly talented young athletes from all around the world.
Outside of work Andy is married to Anna (a yoga instructor with a specialism in trauma), and they have three wonderful kids. He is a passionate cyclist and can often be found escaping the city out in the Kent countryside.

Matthew Cesari is Program Chief and Medical Director of the Laboratory Medicine and Genetics Program at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga, Ontario. He is a gynecologic pathologist and an assistant professor of pathology in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at University of Toronto. He completed medical school and residency in anatomical pathology at 捆绑SM社区, clinical fellowships in both oncologic pathology and gynecologic oncologic pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, as well as a postgraduate fellowship in health sciences education at 捆绑SM社区.

His main administrative interests include coaching for quality and its influence on the development of innovative service delivery models. He is the Vice President of the Canadian Association of Pathologists and serves on several boards, including the Gynecologic Cancer Advisory Committee to Cancer Care Ontario. Matthew is active in post-graduate medical education, having developed a competency-based curriculum for resident remediation in the anatomical pathology residency program at University of Toronto. He is also an examiner with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as an active member of their Anatomical Pathology Examination Development Committee.
Jean-Louis Denis
Professor of Health Policy and Management at the School of Public Health of Montreal University
Dr. Denis' research aims at developing an organizational and comparative perspective on large-scale reforms, transformations and improvement in health systems. He is Professor of Health Policy and Management at the School of Public Health of Montreal University and senior researcher at the CRCHUM.听His current research focus on the role of medical doctors in health system change and improvement, on transformative capacities of health systems in Canada and in Europe and on the development of learning health systems in academic health centers.

Dr. Denis鈥 stature as a leader in his field is evident in the various appointments and honours he has held and received: member of the Academy of Social Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada (2002), fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (2007) and chair of the advisory board of CIHR鈥檚 Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (2009-2012). Since 2000, he has obtained three competitive research Chairs: the CHSRF/CIHR Chair on health system transformation and governance (2000-2010) as Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Medical School of Montreal University, a Canada Research Chair (CRC-tier 1) Chair on health system governance (2010-2017) as professor at the ENAP (National School of Public Administration) and a CRC-Tier 1 on health system design and adaptation as Professor of Health Policy and Management at the School of Public Health of Montreal University.
He was director of the Interdisciplinary Research Group in Health at the Universit茅 de Montr茅al (2006-2010). In 2013, he was co-organizer of the EGOS (European Group of Organizational Studies) annual conference at HEC Montreal-Universit茅 de Montr茅al. In March 2015 he was appointed Visiting Professor at the Department of Management, King's College London and International Visiting Fellow at the King鈥檚 Fund (London) between 2014-2016.
He has published 185 scientific papers, 65 book chapters and obtained $5M in peer-reviewed research funding as PI or co-PI. His work has been published in top health policy and management journals like BMC Health Services Research, Implementation Science, Family Practice and Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law. While Dr Denis鈥 research has primarily taken place in healthcare settings, because of his strong theoretical location in organization theory and strategy, his ideas and findings are transferable to the broader field of organizational science. Indeed, the wider value of his research has been demonstrated through publications in top management and public sector journals like Human Relations, Milbank Quarterly, Organization Science, Public Administration, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Academy of Management Journal and Academy of Management Annals. Since 2016, he is co-editor of the Palgrave series on Organizational Behaviours in Health Care since 2017 Associate Editor of BMC Health Services Research. In addition, since 2000, he had worked closely as senior advisor with the Canadian Foundation on Health Improvement to support their portfolio of collaborative health improvements across Canada and their health system transformation initiatives.

Living with three chronic diseases for more than three decades, and thus a significant user of healthcare services, Mr. Dumez has been actively involved in developing the concept of 鈥淧atient Partnership.鈥 He first explored the concept in his Masters鈥 dissertation. Since then he has pursued the development of patient partners by training patients with chronic diseases, working on the boards of various community organizations and speaking in workshops and conferences addressed to healthcare professionals.
In October 2010, Mr. Dumez became the first director of new Office of Patient Partner Expertise of the University of Montreal鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine. Since summer of 2016, Mr. Dumez now co-directs the new Centre of Excellence on Partnering with Patients and the Public of University of Montreal. The mission of the centre is to make collaborating with patients and the public a science, a culture and the new standard to improve the health of all and the (health) experience of each.
Mr Dumez is on the Board of Director of the Health Research fund of Quebec (FQR-S), of the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI), of the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) and of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Network of Canada (CANet). During the last years, he was also a special advisor for HSO/Accreditation Canada CEO supporting the development and implementation of the patient partnership strategy but also a member of the advisory council for the implementation of a national pharmacare in Canada. Finally, since recently is a member of the BMJ patient panel and now the CMAJ editorial advisory board.
David Eidelman

As Chair, he was responsible for overseeing the largest clinical department of the 捆绑SM社区 Faculty of Medicine and its academic network, which includes the MUHC, the Jewish General Hospital, St. Mary鈥檚 Hospital Center and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, among other partners.
In addition to his administrative successes as Chair and Physician-in-Chief, Dr. Eidelman has served as Director of 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 renowned Division of Respiratory Diseases. After receiving his MDCM (Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery) degree in 1979, Dr. Eidelman continued training in internal medicine at the University of Toronto, first at St. Michael鈥檚 Hospital and then at Toronto General Hospital. He returned to Montreal to pursue advanced training in respiratory medicine and research at 捆绑SM社区. He is an accomplished clinician-scientist, whose research in inflammatory disorders of the airways is based at the Meakins-Christie Laboratories in Montreal. He is also a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
Dr. Eidelman is active in clinical medicine and research in Canada and internationally and currently serves on various boards, including that of the West-Central Montreal Integrated University Health and Social Services Center.
Hossam Elsharkawi

Dr. Hossam Elsharkawi is a seasoned professional and leader with over 30 years of experience in the humanitarian world, the healthcare sector and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

In his humanitarian journey, Hossam has been for past 10 years Vice President for the Canadian Red Cross. He has also worked with ICRC, IFRC, Norwegian Red Cross and Palestine Red Crescent.
Hossam has been leading the preparedness and response to complex humanitarian emergencies 鈥 including epidemics, earthquakes, hurricanes, and wars. He has managed teams responding to catastrophic events domestically and internationally. He has also focused on the capacity strengthening of National Societies, learning and innovation.
His extensive experience includes assignments to more than thirty-five countries and led complex humanitarian negotiations. He completed a one-year assignment as Senior Consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, where he developed a guidance document for medical teams responding to health emergencies in armed conflict and insecure environments. Hossam has a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Biochemistry from the University of Alberta, a Certificate in Healthcare Management from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, and a PhD in Health Management from City University in London, England. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia and guest faculty at 捆绑SM社区 and McMaster Universities. He teaches disaster response and healthcare in complex humanitarian crises. He has authored or edited more than a dozen publications and presentations on issues dealing with humanitarian work, disaster response, healthcare and medical technology, and capacity building.
Hossam, who is married and is a father of two, is fluent in English and Arabic, and possesses a basic grasp of French.

Dr. Timothy Grant Evans joined 捆绑SM社区 in September 2019, as the Inaugural Director and Associate Dean of the School of Population and Global Health (SPGH) in the Faculty of Medicine and Associate Vice-Principal (Global Policy and Innovation). He joins 捆绑SM社区 after a 6 year tenure as the Senior Director of the Health, Nutrition and Population Global Practice at the World Bank Group.

From 2010 to 2013, Tim was Dean of the James P. Grant School of Public Health at BRAC University in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Senior Advisor to the BRAC Health Program. From 2003 to 2010, he was Assistant Director General at the World Health Organization (WHO). Prior to this, he served as Director of the Health Equity Theme at the Rockefeller Foundation.
Earlier in his career, he was an attending physician of internal medicine at Brigham and Women鈥檚 Hospital in Boston and was Assistant Professor in International Health Economics at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Tim has been at the forefront of advancing global health equity and strengthening health systems delivery for more than 20 years. At WHO, he led the Commission on Social Determinants of Health and oversaw the production of the annual World Health Report. He has been a co-founder of many partnerships including the Global Alliance on Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) as well as efforts to increase access to HIV treatment for mothers and innovative approaches to training community-based midwives in Bangladesh.
Tim received his Medical Degree from McMaster University in Canada and was a Research and Internal Medicine Resident at Brigham and Women鈥檚 Hospital. He earned a D.Phil. in Agricultural Economics from University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
Richard Fleet
Emergency physician and clinical health psychologist
Richard Fleet MD PhD, CCFP (EM) is an emergency physician and clinical health psychologist. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Family and Emergency Medicine at Universit茅 Laval in Qu茅bec City since 2010 (tenured since 2016) and holds the endowed research Chair of Emergency Medicine at Universit茅 Laval and H么tel - Dieu de L茅vis Hospital. In April 2016 he was awarded a Clinician-Scientist award (Junior level 2) from the Fonds de Recherche Sant茅-Qu茅bec.

He completed his bachelor of science at 捆绑SM社区 (Psychology 1989), his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the Universit茅 du Qu茅bec 脿 Montr茅al (1995) and his MD at Universit茅 de Montr茅al (2003). His residency training in family medicine was conducted at U Montreal (2005), followed by a certification in emergency medicine CCFP (EM) (2009). He recently completed the Mini-MBA Executive Development Course 1 at 捆绑SM社区 (January 2018).
His research interests include rural emergency and trauma care as well as psychological factors associated with the practice of emergency medicine as well as physician wellness. Since 2018 he has embarked on a national speaking tour with the CMA and has reached more than 2000 with his presentation: Top Evidenced-based Stress Management Techniques for the Doctor and his Patients. Dr Fleet has published more than 70 scientific articles/book chapters and one book.
Between 2006 and 2010, Dr Fleet worked as a rural emergency physician / Chair of the Emergency Department at Kootenay Lake hospital in Nelson BC. His experience in this hospital, after it underwent the major health care cuts, has inspired his current research program. Dr Fleet and his team have become international leaders in the field of rural emergency medicine research. In 2019 Dr Fleet and colleagues founded the Living Lab hospital Charlevoix. A user driven novel approach to the implementation of innovations in rural emergency care.
Finally, Fleet is the rural representative on the board of l鈥橝ssociation des M茅decins d鈥橴rgence du Qu茅bec. And is a member of the 鈥淩ural medicine road map鈥 committee of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Miriam Gosling Gage
Coach specialising in Personal Development challenges
Miriam Gosling Gage works as a Coach specialising in Personal Development challenges. Jody Hoffer Gittell
Professor at Brandeis University's Heller School for Social Policy and Management
Jody Hoffer Gittell serves as Professor at Brandeis University's Heller School for Social Policy and Management. She is the founder of relational coordination theory, co-founder of the Relational Coordination Research Collaborative, and creator of the Relational Coordination Survey. Gittell has studied the impact of relational coordination on performance in airlines, long term care, and especially healthcare. In addition to assessing performance outcomes, she has studied how organizations strengthen relational coordination among key stakeholders through the adoption of structural, relational and work process interventions.
