Every year, 聽puts on an awards gala to highlight musicians and music industry professionals in Qu茅bec. Included in this year's nominations for Jazz Album of the Year, Classical - Large Ensemble Album of the Year and Classical - Small Ensemble Album of the Year are many Schulich faculty, alumni and students, which we've highlighted in our list below.聽

David Jager is a聽composer, producer and broadcaster based in Toronto. He聽was recently named a Member of the Order of Canada聽"for being at the forefront of Canadian music creation, performance and promotion, notably through his broadcasts, and for having fostered a generation of musicians."

In a WholeNote article published at the end of August, he reflects on the role of the CBC in fostering young compositional talent in Canada and the importance of the nation's聽ongoing investment in young composers.

According to the SSHRC, the Insight program was established with the goal to 鈥渟upport and foster excellence in social sciences and humanities research intended to deepen, widen and increase our collective understanding of individuals and societies, as well as to inform the search for solutions to societal challenges.鈥

The list highlights some of the most promising young musicians from across Canada, acting as an annual shortlist of the country's brightest new talents in classical music.聽

We are very excited to launch our 2018-2019聽season, with several聽brand聽new additions to the program as well as the usual favourites. Over 600 performances by members of Schulich鈥檚 vibrant musical community are on offer, presentations by our world-class researchers as well as visiting guests, masterclasses by international guest artists, a new concert series, and a new composition competition to add to our long-established list of student competitions.聽

Jam sessions have long been a cornerstone of jazz communities in cities around the world. In addition to offering playing and networking opportunities for the participants, they also act as a chance for anyone who shows up to celebrate the music they love.

In Montreal, there were three main jams for many years 鈥 Monday鈥檚 session at Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, Diese Onze on Tuesday nights, and Grumpy鈥檚 Bar on Wednesdays. These events mostly took place around downtown Montreal, so there was an opportunity for a jam to open up in another of the city鈥檚 neighbourhoods.
