Did Newton鈥檚 dog really set fire to his manuscripts? Was Einstein鈥檚 brain stolen after his death and "lost" for nearly two decades? Did Descartes build an automaton to replace his deceased daughter? This lecture will explore how both true and apocryphal stories have shaped public perceptions of science, scientific discovery, and its most iconic figures. Through this exploration, the lecture will emphasize the power of anecdotes as literary devices, revealing how they serve as intersections between philosophical ideas and the narratives through which science is understood.
The sedimented cultural and geopolitical histories of the Asia Pacific are hidden deep in the earth鈥檚 strata, submerged under the ocean waves, and preserved by forests, rivers, reefs, and islands. Such layered formations and transformations of the region have posed new challenges and opportunities for environmental humanities scholars and artists interested in exploring interconnected processes of mediation that move beyond national boundaries and technological milieus.

This workshop will introduce the fundamental tool of Industry Analysis which companies use for strategy development. For startups, understanding the industry is a critical step in determining market entry and market positioning. The Five Forces Framework will be presented and applied to during an exercise.

Tania Branigan, Foreign Leader Writer at听The Guardian, will deliver the 2024 Cundill Lecture on her award winning book,听Red Memory: Living, Remembering and Forgetting China's Cultural Revolution. Branigan was awarded the 2023 Cundill History Prize for her 鈥渉aunting鈥 excavation of the Cultural Revolution. Uncovering forty years of silence, following countless hours of interviews, Branigan鈥檚听Red Memory听gives voices to those who lived through Mao鈥檚 decade of madness.

Come join the Department of English for an evening devoted to historical fiction in literature. 2024 Richler Writers-in-Residence Ann-Marie MacDonald and Heather O鈥橬eill will read from their recent novels, followed by a discussion about historical fiction with Professor Alexander Manshel and Ara Osterweil.
