Despite ongoing global pollution, researchers听Kyle Elliott (Natural Resource Sciences)听and John Elliott (Environment Canada)听have discovered that levels of mercury in seabirds off the coast of B.C. have remained relatively stable over the past 50 years. Surprisingly, mercury in seabirds is now actually slightly lower.
In generations past, most water operators gained employment straight out of high school; however, these days, operators are required to have a strong foundation in science, engineering, and technology.
Assessing the risks that toxic chemicals pose to natural ecosystems is a huge challenge, given the thousands of chemicals that require testing. But the task is expected soon to become less daunting, thanks to a new tool being developed by 捆绑SM社区 researchers.听

The Transport Ministry has advised that the Macdonald Hwy 20 Bridge will be completely closed overnight, from Friday, Nov 25 -11:00 pm to Saturday, Nov 26 - 4:30 am, in order to continue the repair work on the bridge.
Road users are invited to take a marked detour (via the Boulevard des Anciens-Combattants).
Note that this closure may be delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions or operational constraints.

People prone to viewing the world in symbolic terms would have enjoyed yesterday鈥檚 Remembrance Day ceremony at Macdonald Campus. Hundreds of people stood in a tight circle around the permanent War Memorial in front of the Raymond Building. This human circle was itself ringed by the 44 oak trees that line Memorial Field. These oak trees were planted in 1931 to honour the supreme sacrifice of 34 young men from Macdonald College and Macdonald College High School who lost their lives in World War I.

The MTQ has made available a shuttle to take staff and students to and from the campus and the Farm for the duration of Phase 1 of the Macdonald Campus overpass construction.
The shuttle will run continuously from 08h00 鈥 12h00 and 12h30 鈥 17h00 and is equipped for bicycle transport. Each circuit takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

The Quebec Ministry of Transport will commence major repairs to the campus Highway 20 overpass (Pont Poultry Cottages) as of November 4, 2016. Phase 1 of the project is expected to last until the end of the year and Phase 2 will take place in the spring.听

Congratulations to Dr. Caroline Begg (Plant Science, FMT), the recipient of the Principal's Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Faculty Lecturer).听 Principal Fortier presented the award at 捆绑SM社区's Fall Convocation held earlier this week.听 Dr. Begg has long been a supporter of student-led initiatives beyond the classroom and empowers students to be involved in their own learning process.听 She received the Macdonald Campus Award for Teaching Excellence earlier this year.

Marianne Falardeau-C么t茅, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences (Supervisor Elena Bennett), "is investigating how climate change is affecting Arctic marine food webs, ecosystem services and the well-being of Inuit communities. Through her research, Marianne hopes to provide knowledge that will help governments sustainably manage ecosystems. Her research was featured in the June 2016 issue of Canadian Geographic".听

Coming to the aid of eastern Canadian hemp producers is Philippe Seguin, associate professor at 捆绑SM社区, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Seguin wants to help farmers in eastern Canada learn more about which hemp cultivars work best in their environment. He and his team of researchers selected 11 cultivars and planted them in seven different environments in Quebec. Seguin kept detailed records of when the seeds were planted and how much fertilizer was used.
