Government funding sources

À¦°óSMÉçÇø Canadian students from outside of Quebec are eligible for government aid assistance through their province of residence.

ÌýOut-of-province government aid has two funding sources*:

  • federal government aid: known as the (CSFA Program)
  • provincial government aid: each province or territory has its own

Students need only submit one application through their provincial portal. They are then assessed for both types of government aid at once.

*The Northwest Territories and Nunavut have stand-alone government aid programs that are not integrated with the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program.

Student responsibilities

It is the student’s responsibility to:

  • complete their government aid application on time
  • check their application status on their provincial government aid account before coming toÌýScholarships and Student AidÌýfor related inquiries
  • refer back to their provincial aid account regularly for file and funding updates
  • create a CSFAÌýaccount (in addition to their provincial aid account)
  • inform the ministry of any changes in income, including those related to bursaries, scholarships and awards. Important: in the case of the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), Scholarships and Student AidÌýdeclares to the ministry, on your behalf, all bursaries (need-based awards) you have received. Do not report these to OSAP as this will result in twice the amount being recorded on your file.)

ÌýScholarships and Student Aid’s role

Students are encouraged to register for their intended course load for both Fall and Winter terms in order to avoid delays and/or recalculation of funds.
  • We help students with the application, appeals process and eligibility requirements
  • We provide students with information about their government jurisdiction’s policies and procedures

Government aid Confirmations

  • Although applications for Government Aid Financial Assistance open early in the Summer (May/June), our Office cannot process any confirmations prior to finalizing the costs for the academic year in question, generally during the month of July.
  • Program Information Forms: Program Information Forms are actioned in late July for the Fall term and in late November for the Winter term.
  • Confirmation of Enrollment: Based on the timing of governments’ confirmation of enrollment requests, which is generally aligned with the start of the program, processing from our office begins soon thereafter, in mid August for the Fall term and as of early December for the Winter term.
  • Should you experience delays in receiving your Government Aid funds you may apply for Fee Deferral.
