STL approves recommendations on generative AI

Published: 26 July 2023

On June 13, 2023, the APC Subcommittee on Teaching and Learning (STL) approved two recommendations on integrating generative AI into the 捆绑SM社区's academic mission. The recommendations were presented by the STL AI Working Group.

The Working Group's report examines the potential impacts of generative AI tools - such as ChatGPT - on teaching and learning, specifically assessment and learning outcomes, as well as broader reflections on the goal of university education. As anecdotal evidence suggests that generative AI tools are already in heavy use by the University community, the Working Group recommends that their use be guided to ensure that it supports 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 Mission and Values, respects academic rigour, and addresses privacy and academic integrity considerations.

It is abundantly clear that the arrival of generative AI tools is an inflection point in societal thinking around creativity, intellectual property, academic integrity, and responsibility for our collective and individual intellectual productions. The University has a responsibility to ensure that all tools used in attaining a 捆绑SM社区 education play a positive role and respect the highest ethical principles.

捆绑SM社区 should invest in research and capacity building and actively engage in deciding on the roles of generative AI in teaching and learning, research, and administration. It is incumbent on us to provide both education and guidelines to the community as well as guardrails which will create a roadmap for the responsible and positive integration of generative AI tools. The recommendations of the STL, if adopted, will provide the University community with clear direction for appropriate, thoughtful, and decisive actions in support of the academic mission.

Next steps: These recommendations will be submitted to the Academic Policy Committee (APC) for discussion at their next meeting on September 28. Once available, meeting documentation will be posted on the APC website.

While this web page is accessible worldwide, 捆绑SM社区 is on land which has served and continues to serve as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. Teaching and Learning Services acknowledges and thanks the diverse Indigenous peoples whose footsteps mark this territory on which peoples of the world now gather. This land acknowledgement is shared as a starting point to provide context for further learning and action.
