Major and Minor Program


Major Concentration in Sociology (36 credits)

The purpose of the Major concentration is to give the student a comprehensive understanding of the field of sociology.

Required Courses (12 credits)

"While it is strongly recommended that SOCI 210 and 211 be taken in the U1, in the event that they are full and students are unable to register, they can be taken later"

  • SOCI 210 (3) Sociological Perspectives
  • SOCI 211 (3) Sociological Inquiry
  • SOCI 330 (3) Classical Sociological Theory
  • SOCI 350 (3) Statistics in Social Research*

*IMPORTANT: The following 捆绑SM社区 courses are considered equivalent to SOCI 350: AEMA 310, BIOL 373, ECON 227D1/D2, ECON 257D1/D2, GEOG 202, MATH 203, MGCR 271, MGCR 273, POTH 204, and PSYC 204. If you took a statistics course in CEGEP and it is recognized on your 捆绑SM社区 transcript as equivalent to MATH 203, it is likewise equivalent to SOCI 350. You may not take the same statistics course twice. If you have taken an equivalent statistics course, you MUST REPLACE SOCI 350 with another SOCI course at the 300 level or higher to fulfill the U2 course requirements.

Complementary Courses (24 credits*)

At least 3 of these credits must be at the 400 level or higher, and no more than 9 of these credits may be at the 200 level.

*A student taking the Major Concentration may take no more than 6 credits throughout the three-year program from the following : SOCI 340/SOCI 341, SOCI 342/SOCI 343, SOCI 440/SOCI 441, SOCI 442/SOCI 443.

Seminars at the 500-level are open to Honours students and social science Major Concentration students in their final year, and Minor Concentration students only with permission of the instructor.

Independent Reading and Research Course/ Internship Course/Honours Project/ or Current Problems in Sociology

Students interested in completing an Undergraduate Independent Reading and Research Course/ Internship Course/Honours Project/ or Current Problems in Sociology fill out the聽Undergraduate independent Reading and Research Courses/ Internship Courses/ Honours Project/ Current Problems in Sociology Form聽[.pdf] and take it to the professor who will supervise your project.


Minor Concentration in Sociology (18 credits)

The purpose of the Minor Concentration is to give the student a basic understanding of the field of sociology.
