MScA Prerequisites

Our goal is to attract high calibre students with an array of perspectives who have the potential to become highly competent and creative clinicians. Our M.Sc.A.听in Speech Language Pathology admissions requirements include prerequisite coursework in linguistics, psychology, and statistics, but no specific undergraduate degree is required.

Prerequisite Courses (21 credits* total):

  • 3 credits in:

Statistics - Students must have taken a course in statistics that covers computation of either Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) or multiple regression. Often a sequence of two courses is necessary to cover this material.

  • 18 credits in the following domains (additional details below):

Linguistics - minimum of 6 credits. MUST include 3 credits in "Introduction to Linguistics" and 3 credits in "Phonetics"

Psychology - minimum of 6 credits.

Related Areas - up to 3 of the 18 credits can be in one of these related areas: neuroscience, physiology, anatomy, education, health or rehabilitation sciences.

Linguistics - MANDATORY PREREQUISITES:

  • 3听credits in Introduction to Linguistics -- courses that meet our criteria for the Intro requirement should cover a wide range of topics in linguistics including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics.
  • 3 credits in Phonetics -- courses that meet our criteria for the Phonetics requirement would normally have a prerequisite course, be focused solely on phonetics, and cover transcription of speech samples. Any course not taken in a Linguistics department must be approved.

Additional courses in any of the following areas are suggested:

  • Phonology
  • Syntax
  • Morphology
  • Semantics
  • Applied Linguistics
  • Linguistic study of a particular language

Psychology

Applicants must have taken at least 6 credits in Psychology. Courses in the following areas are suggested. Other courses in Psychology are acceptable.

  • Child Development
  • Human Behaviour and the Brain
  • Language Development
  • Neuropsychology
  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Perception
  • Attention and Memory
  • Cognition
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Atypical Child Development
  • Cognitive Science
  • Aging

Related Areas

Courses in neuroscience, physiology, anatomy, education, health or rehabilitation sciences may be counted toward 3 of the 18 credits required in Linguistics, Psychology and Related Areas, provided that 6 Linguistics credits and 6 Psychology credits have been completed.

*Notes:

  • 3 credits is the equivalent of a 1 semester-length course, 6 credits is the equivalent of a 2 semester-length courses or a year-long course.
  • For applications to be considered, prerequisite courses must be completed or be in progress in the academic year prior to beginning the Master鈥檚 program (with supporting documentation of enrolment).
  • During the application process you will be asked to provide details (course name, number, semester enrolled and number of credits) for all prerequisite courses completed in progress, or planned. Please have all of this information ready when you begin the Slate application process.
  • You will also need to upload the course outline of your statistics course to Slate.
