罢丑别听聽(NAI) and the聽聽(IPO) announced the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents report for 2019, published on June 2, 2020. Their report on trends within academic patenting is created using data from the聽聽(USPTO), and highlights the vital role patents play in university research and innovation.
For the first time in the report鈥檚 history, 捆绑SM社区 has obtained a Top 100 spot. 捆绑SM社区 ranked 98th among universities in the world and tied with the University of Toronto for the second spot among Canadian universities. 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 ranking is not far behind the University of British Colombia, which ranked number one in Canada and 79th worldwide.
鈥溊Π骃M社区鈥檚 ranking is pretty impressive, as we receive fewer invention reports compared to the other Canadian universities listed,鈥 says Mark Weber, 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 Director of Innovation and Partnerships. 鈥淭he ranking shows that we invent technologies that are truly novel, are non-obvious, and have utility.鈥

The NAI and IPO have published the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents report annually since 2013. The rankings of the most recent report are based upon the number of utility patents granted in the 2019 calendar year.

A utility patent is a patent that covers the creation of a new or improved鈥攁nd useful鈥攑roduct, process, or machine. When a patent is assigned to one or more entities, credit is given to the first named entity. For the purposes of this report, a university is defined as an institution that grants undergraduate-level degrees.
