Non-Accredited Site Elective Rotations

Your rotation is in Quebec and you are not sure if it is accredited to any Quebec University? Check the before applying.

Eligibility:

  • Trainees must complete at least 6 periods of training at a home institution.
  • Trainees must be in good standing in order to do a rotation away.
  • Trainees doing post-residency training (fellowship or formation complémentaire) should complete all required rotations at accredited sites. However, a rotation at an unaccredited site for a maximum duration of 30 days per year of post-residency training can be accepted.
  • Requests to go to which are not covered by the DARSSS (malpractice coverage) will be refused.

Requirements:

  • Non-accredited site rotations need to be approved by the Program Director and Assistant Dean, Admissions, Equity andEnrolment,and meet the following criteria:
  1. There is a designated supervisor for the rotation.
  2. The objectives of training are clearly defined and understood.
  3. The evaluation system is well defined, and the evaluation of the trainee is based on the training objectives of the rotation.
  • The total duration of rotations at an unaccredited site must not exceed:
    • 2 periods for trainees registered in Family Medicine
    • 6 periods for trainees registered in a specialty/subspecialty
      • The 6 periods limit includes all unaccredited site training done during the entirety of specialty residency training in Québec. For example, internal medicine and cardiology, or pediatrics and pediatric ID/Med Micro, or Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • These permitted months of rotation have been divided into two categories:

3 months for trainees registered in a specialty, can be accepted, provided the rotation meets the condition of being “not very or not at all available in Quebec”. *1 month for trainees registered in Family Medicine in the same category.

For the remaining months, 3 months for trainees registered in a specialty, the rotation can be used in order to acquire any other elective competency. *1 month for trainees registered in Family Medicine in the same category.

  • Rotations at an unaccredited site cannot be done for more than 3 consecutive months (after a 3-month rotation at an unaccredited site, a resident must do a minimum of 1 month at an accredited site before doing another rotation at an unaccredited site).
  • Trainees will be supervised and evaluated according to the University’s Evaluation and Promotion Guidelines and will ensure that a SM in-training evaluation form is completed and submitted to the Program Director upon completion of the rotation.
  • RAMQ-remunerated residents should note that they may not receive pay for unaccredited site rotations if the above rules are not respected.
  • Trainees on a work permit mustcontact the host university to inquire regardingtheir specific policy forreceiving trainees who areon a work permit at their home university.

Steps to apply:

Residents and fellows who wish to do an elective at a non-accredited site must obtain approval from their program director as well as from the PGME Office. Trainees sponsored by a source other than RAMQ may also need to get approval from their sponsoring agency.

The form needs to reach the PGME office two months prior to the elective.LATE REQUESTS WILL BE REFUSED.

  1. Trainees interested in doing a non-accredited elective rotation must obtain the Program Director’s approval.
  2. Trainees should fill out theRequest for a Rotation in a Non Accredited Site Form and have it signed by the Program Director (see how to fill the form correctly here).
  3. Please email the completed form to your Residency Coordinator.
  4. Once the request is processed, the form will be returned to the trainee.
  5. If your elective is outside of Quebec or outside of Canada, you need to complete a MANDATORY SM Student Travel Registry.
  6. For trainees going outside of Quebec: (malpractice coverage) is needed.

To obtain an “Attestation of insurance coverage” you need to send the documents and information below to the insurance branch (Direction des assurances) of the Health and Social Services Network (Réseau de la santé et des services sociaux, or DARSSS):

  • Your name
  • Name of Quebec base hospital
  • Name of host hospital and location (city, province or state, and country if outside North America)
  • Duration of rotation (start and end dates)
  • Name of rotation
  • Copy of your training card
