Elizabeth Wirth gives $7.5M to Schulich School of Music
捆绑SM社区 alumna Elizabeth A. Wirth, BA鈥64, has made a landmark gift of $7.5 million to enhance student-related programs at the Schulich School of Music of 捆绑SM社区. In recognition of her exceptional generosity for this and previous gifts, 捆绑SM社区 is naming the New Music Building on Sherbrooke St. in her honour. The announcements of the gift and the renaming of the building were made earlier this evening at a special event at 捆绑SM社区 celebrating philanthropy and showcasing the impact that private support is having on the Schulich School of Music and its students.
Philippe Leroux wins French Acad茅mie des beaux-arts composition prize
Professor Philippe Leroux has been awarded the 2015听Prix de composition musicale de la Fondation Simone et Cino Del Duca, for the composition of an original short work for orchestra.听 The work will be premiered later this year at the Institut de France.
Since 1995, the Simone et Cino Del Duca Foundation has honoured French painters, sculptors and composers for their work in the Fine Arts.

Just published by Editions Vrin in Paris,听"Perception et cognition de la musique: Les conf茅rences Alphonse听Dupront" presents the 4 Distinguished Lectures delivered by Prof.听McAdams during his tenure in the Chaire Alphonse Dupront in听musicology at the Universit茅 Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) in Mayn2008 and in the "Bilan et tendances des musicologies" series a听the Universit茅 de Montr茅al in 2009.

Winners of the Dean's Essay Prize Announced
Generously funded by the Dean, this competition celebrates excellence in the art of writing about music in the different genres in which it unfolds.听 Papers in each genre are judged on the basis of the criteria that distinguish each as the 鈥渂est of its kind.鈥澨 When comparing across genres the panel emphasized the quality and presentation of ideas, with special emphasis this year on the originality of methodological approaches and contribution to the discipline.听听 The papers are judged by an inter-disciplinary panel.

Review of D茅nes V谩rjon's piano recital.
As part of the Montr茅al en Lumi猫re Winter Festival, internationally renowned pianist D茅nes V谩rjon was invited to perform a solo recital at 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 Schulich School of Music. Currently a professor at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, V谩rjon鈥檚 program was fit for a conservatory, a sort of chronological overview of the literature with Classical and Romantic standards, a piece from the warhorse cabinet and a touch of modernist flare. The evening was a display of varying styles and challenges that demonstrated V谩rjon鈥檚 adaptability and dexterity.
捆绑SM社区 Concerto Competition Piano Winners Announced
Geoffrey Conquer, student of Marina Mdivani and Zhenni Li, student of St茅phane Lemelin, were declared joint winners of the Schulich Concerto Competition, piano. 听Conquer, who performed the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor and Li who performed the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, will both play with the 捆绑SM社区 Symphony Orchestra in the 2015-2016 season.听
Violist Marina Thibeault wins 捆绑SM社区 Concerto Competition for Strings.
The String Area Winner of the 捆绑SM社区 concerto competition is violist Marina Thibault, a student of Andr茅 Roy. 听In the competition she performed the Schnittke Viola Concerto. The other finalists were Veronika Cherniak, student of Andrew Wan; Elizabeth Skinner, student of Axel Strauss; Ma茂th茅na Thibault, student of Andrew Wan. 听Congratulations to all who participated.
Renowned violist Steven Dann appointed to Schulich String Faculty
The Schulich School of Music is delighted to announce the appointment of internationally-renowned violist Steven Dann as Catherine Thornhill Steele Chair in Viola starting September 2015, for a period of three years. Steven Dann's career has covered a wealth of violistic possibilities. As principal viola of some of the world's leading orchestras, as a veteran of the string quartet and chamber music world, as soloist and recitalist and as a dedicated teacher.
Thierry Tidrow, BMus 09 awarded Jules L茅ger Prize for New Chamber Music
The Composition Area of the Schulich School of Music is pleased to announce that one of its former students, Thierry Tidrow (BMus, Honours Composition and Major Music Theory, 2009) is the recipient of the 2014 Jules L茅ger Prize for New Chamber Music. During his bachelor's program, Mr. Tidrow studied composition with Professors Christoph Neidh枚fer and Brian Cherney.

Grammy Awards for Professor Richard King.
Professor Richard King received two Grammy awards this past weekend in the categories of Best Contemporary Instrumental Album ("Bass & Mandolin" 听Chris Thile & Edgar Meyer) and听Best Orchestral Performance (John Adams: "City Noir" 听David Robertson, conductor, St. Louis Symphony) 听both on the Nonesuch label. 听With these two latest awards, Prof. King now has a total of 14 Grammy awards.听
