Zi Hua Tan finalist for the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award

Zi Hua Tan, a Doctoral composition student of Prof. John Rea has been named afinalist forthe 2017 Toru Takemitsu Composition Award. Out of 115 entries from 36 countries, Zi Hua Tan’s composition, …at the still point…was chosen to be among the four finalists of theToru Takemitsu Composition Award 2017. World-renowned composerHeinzHolliger was the solejudge.Scored for symphony orchestra, Tan's work was composed in the context of the Student Composer-in-Residence program at the Schulich School of Music.

The final competition round will take place at a concert given by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra on May 28, 2017.

Zi Hua Tan was born in Kota Bharu, Malaysia in 1983. He is Canadian‐based composer whose works have been performed in Asia, Europe and North America, at events such as Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt (Germany), Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik (Germany), Royaumont “Voix Nouvelles” (France), the Tongyeong International Music Festival (Korea), and Akademie Schloss Solitude Summer Academy (Germany). Among the ensembles he has worked with include the Ensemble Mosaik, Ensemble Recherche, and Ensemble SurPlus. He has won several prizes and grants, including the“Goethe Award”at TIMF.
