Call for Proposals for LGBTQ2I+ History Month Presentations

Published: 30 May 2019

We are pleased to invite Schulich faculty, staff, students, and alumni to submit proposals for presentations for inclusion in an LGBTQ2I+ History Month event. Scheduled for 28 September 2019 (7:00 p.m., Wirth Opera Studio), the event aims to highlight the accomplishments of LGBTQ2I+ musicians and music researchers past and present, while displaying the breadth and scope of work within the broader field of music. Presentations may take the form of a research paper, musical performance, new composition, or combination of these.

We ask that presentations be limited to 10 minutes in length and aim to include 5-7 presenters. There is no limit to the number of participants that can be involved in each presentation. This call is open to all areas of music research and all genres of music.

Proposals are due by 30 June 2019 and will be examined by a selection committee. Notifications will be sent out by 15 July 2019. Note that the event will take place shortly after classes resume in the fall so rehearsal time will be limited.

Please include in your proposal:

  • Working title of your presentation or, if performing a piece, please list relevant information (Title of piece, sections, opus number, arranger, etc.)
  • Names of participants (at least one group member should be a member of the Schulich community)
  • Approximate length of presentation
  • A/V needs
  • A brief description (250 words max) of your project, detailing how it is connected to LGBTQ2I+ history
  • Scores and recordings/links may be submitted to support your proposal

The event will feature a premi猫re of scenes from Juanita Marchand Knight鈥檚 work in progress, Them, about the lives of surrealist artists, LBGTQ2I+ trailblazers, and anti-Nazi activists, Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore.

About LGBTQ2I+ History Month at 捆绑SM社区:

This year, 捆绑SM社区 will celebrate its second LGBTQ+ History Month, organized by the Social Equity and Diversity Education (SEDE) Office, with the collaboration of the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (IGSF), The 捆绑SM社区 JBSCE Subcommittee on Queer People, the 捆绑SM社区 Library, the Office for Sexual Violence Response, Support, and Education (OSVRSE), Queer 捆绑SM社区, the Queer Grad Club and many other 捆绑SM社区 and community partners.

The goal of LGBTQ+ History Month is to celebrate and highlight the history and achievements of LGBTQ+ communities at 捆绑SM社区 and more broadly in Montr茅al, Qu茅bec and Canada. Through a series of screenings, panels, workshops and community events, LGBTQ+ History Month aims at raising awareness, advancing education and increasing the visibility of LGBTQ+ communities by recognizing their history and contributions, building bridges and bringing together 捆绑SM社区 students, staff, faculty, alumni and Montr茅al community members.

LGBTQ+ History Month started in 1994 in Missouri, to highlight and teach LGBTQ+ History, and while it is celebrated broadly in the United States and the United Kingdom, it will the first of its kind here in a Canadian university.
