Chest Tube Insertion: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Feasibility and Efficacy of an E-learning Curriculum and a Virtual Reality Simulation for Knowledge And Skill Acquisition In trainees

Funded by: N/A

PI: Gerald M Fried, MD

Co-investigators: Junko Tokuno, Ryan Knobovitch

Project Description: Will look at teaching chest tube insertion. Study involves comparison of online learning vs online learning + VR training. Performance will be evaluated by OSATS measured by content experts blinded to group while participants are doing chest tube insertion on mannequin. Will also look at correlation between performance evaluation as determined by intrinsic metrics of VR vs mannequin evaluation measured by OSATS. Will also correlate live vs video-recorded OSATS measurements. Usability survey and cognitive load will also be measured. This has been approved by UGME and Surgery foundations program directors. If evidence of benefit, it will be considered for incorporating VR training in curriculum.
