Innovations in Teaching and Learning

The research domain that focuses on Innovations in Teaching and Learning is one of the broadest in HSE. It addresses the theory and practice of how students in the health professions and health sciences learn in a variety of contexts and how educators can enhance teaching and learning in multiple settings. Educational theories that underpin research in this area include those related to situated learning, observational learning, social learning, mastery learning, inter-professional learning, and emotions. Learning contexts include the classroom, the clinical workplace, and technology-enabled learning environments; two areas of concentration include simulation-based education and competency-based medical education. Scholarship in this domain serves to inform teaching and learning, instructional design and curriculum development, ensuring that best practices are clearly defined, disseminated, implemented and evaluated. Research in this domain also holds significant implications for the development of policy and practice at all levels of HSE.
