About Niall's elective
Niall spent his Family Medicine rotation in East Africa, travelling to Tanzania and Kenya for two months in the winter of 2011.聽 In his application, Niall articulates how his experience abroad "resulted in a far-ranging adventure that profoundly changed [his] understanding of how social, cultural, and economic problems underpin illness and disease".聽 While working in Moshi, Tanzania in a mobile clinic, Niall reflected on the lessons he learned about the sustainability of healthcare missions, as well as about linguistic and cultural aspects of healthcare provision.聽 In Nairobi, Kenya, his experiences working in a sexual health clinic provided an invaluable experience of working with marginalized populations as well as learning about the politics of sex work.聽 Finally, at a district hospital in Siaya, western Kenya, Niall gained first-hand knowledge of infectious diseases, as well as more subtle influences on health, such as "how tribal politics inform health-care delivery, and how cultural conflicts conflate health-care challenges".聽
