Goodman Cancer Student Society (GCSS)

Established in听2014, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows partnered to create the Goodman Cancer听Student Society (GCSS). Students interested in forming the GCSS prepared and signed a first-year mandate for the GCSS to organize social, scientific and professional activities for trainees conducting research at the GCI.

Responsibilities of GCSS members include joining in GCI听fundraising efforts and representing the interests of its students and postdoctoral fellows. Moreover, the student society was given the opportunity to invite international speakers to come share their work with the Institute. On a local scale, weekly presentations featuring the scientific success stories are organized at the Centre through the Spotlight series.

The GCSS consists of five main positions with regularly recurring responsibilities, each filled by a pair of trainees. Members-at-large can attend GCSS meetings, which occur monthly, and assist in events in general. Our members also organize events on behalf of the GCSS, such as fundraising for both the Canderel and Terry Fox run, as well as the annual GCI听Christmas Party. In brief, the GCSS plays an integral part in making the GCI听an exciting environment where research can be pushed to the edge of science.

Co-President: Hailey Dall-Proud

I am a PhD 2 student in William Muller鈥檚 lab. My research looks at cancer stem cells, the impact of the immune environment and the role of the estrogen receptor as mechanisms exploited by HER2+ breast cancer cells to evade treatment and promote tumour development. I wanted to become GCSS Co-President so I could help make a positive impact on the GCI. I have always enjoyed planning and organizing events, there's something so fulfilling about executing a major project. I'm excited to be able to make my, and other GCSS members, ideas come to life this year! My goal for the upcoming year is to find new ways to engage trainees at the GCI: whether it's at our social events, fundraising initiatives or Spotlight seminars. Now that we are moving towards in-person events we hope to promote a more unified GCI.

Fun Fact: I was a competitive dancer my entire life from ages 5-18 (and it really is just like the TV show "Dance Moms").

Co-President: Stephanie Han

I am a PhD 2 student in Vincent Giguere鈥檚 lab. My research focuses on prostate cancer and investigating novel molecular mechanisms by which tumors evade conventional androgen deprivation therapy - the process that makes prostate cancer the second deadliest cancer in men. Witnessing the impact that a student-led initiative can have through GCSS, I ran for co-president in the hope to continue creating an exciting research environment for GCI trainees, circulating frontier research, and raising awareness of cancer research. This year, I wish to provide opportunities for GCI members to interact outside of their labs, promote networking and collaboration and bring GCI together as a community. I also hope to push our fundraising initiatives outside of GCI to the general Montreal community, expanding awareness to the general public.

Fun fact: I love animals and I have two bunnies, named Niuniu and Bubu.

EDI Representative: Marine Lingrand

I am a PhD 5 student in Ian Watson's Lab. I am working on better understand the sex bias in melanoma. As a woman in science and an international student I think the equity, diversity and inclusion topics are primordial in 2022 that is why I choose to be more involved in it choosing this position. What I would like to achieve in 2022-2023 is the continuity of what was previously done by our EDI initiatives. I would like everyone at the GCI feel represented, safe and be able to get help from me or the university for any concern they may have.

Fun fact: I鈥檇 say I am a traveller; I love to discover new culture, food and landscapes! And last but not least, I am a sport person, always up to hike, climb, ski, dive, play volley-ball, run, etc.

Treasurer: Alexandre Poirier

I am a PhD 3 student in Michel Tremblay鈥檚 lab. My research focuses on using phosphatase inhibitors to boost the immune system's response against cancer. I am interested in finance and I like to optimize things, so here I am! This year, I hope to make more events so that we can put this pandemic behind and get back to normal.

External Communications Officer: Yu Gu

I am a PhD 3 student in William Muller鈥檚 lab. My research uses in vivo models to study the environmental factors that affect breast cancer dormancy and recurrence. I am excited to work alongside GCI Communications to increase recognition of our trainees, close the gap in scientific communication and render science more accessible both within our academic establishment and between our scientists and the public.

Fun fact: I can (almost) speak four languages and I love to try new foods and read
