Professionals Grants

The Professionals Grants category is designed for health professionals interested in child health*. Additionally, all applicants, especially those with community-based and/or participatory research, are strongly encouraged to seek a local partner that can provide expertise and assistance in the proposed research area and site. The local partner should be recognized in the research site and be able and willing to spend time assisting the project team. If applicable, a letter of support from the local partner is required.

Eligibility

  1. The primary applicant must:
    • Be a trained and/or practicing professional in one of the health fields listed here.
    • Be proficient in either French, English or both.
    • Be a citizen and resident of a low or lower-middle income country (LMIC) as classified by the .
    • Not have been awarded a GCHP grant, as the primary applicant, in the last 5 years.
  2. Research site must be an LMIC, preferably the primary applicant’s home country or a naturalized place of residence.
  3. If making a group submission, it is recommended that at least 2 professions/disciplines are represented in the team. It is advised that at least one member of the team is a senior researcher.

Requirements

Language: Applications may be completed in English or French [voir les informations sur les bourses en français]. Documents in languages other than English or French must be accompanied by an official translation into either English or French provided by the institution issuing the document, or by a certified translator (both versions must be attached as a single file).
As evidence suggests that documents written in French require approximately 20% more space than similar documents written in English, applicants submitting a proposal in French are allowed an additional page for the research proposal and the research contributions documents.
Formatting guidelines: Files should be named using this format: “Applicant’s last name_document type.” Example: “Ofili_Resumé.” Acceptable file types are .doc, .docx, and .pdf. All the documents should be single-spaced, have normal margins (1-inch margins on the top, bottom and both sides of the page), and have a font size not smaller than 11, with the specified page limits respected.
Note: Applications that are 1) incomplete, 2) not meeting the eligibility criteria, and 3) not following the stipulated guidelines will NOT be considered.

Individual submissions

Applicants are required to complete an requesting the following information:

  1. Abstract (maximum 350 words). The abstract must be uploaded separately, and should include background, project objectives, planned methods, hypothesis, expected study significance, and a maximum of four (4) key words.
  2. Research proposal (maximum 3 pages [maximum 4 pages if prepared in French], not including references and appendices). To help guide your submission, the research proposal guidelines are outlined here.

    The following appendices must be included in the proposal:
    • An approximate one-year timeline listing the research steps that need to be accomplished and the estimated duration for each step/activity (e.g., ethics approval, personnel training, participants recruitment and follow-up, data analysis, report and presentation) (maximum 1 page).
    • A tabulated budget breakdown listing and justifying the itemized project expenses of up to CAD$3,000 (e.g., personnel hired, services required, non-reusable and reusable equipment and materials). (maximum 1 page). The budget must include a column showing amounts in Canadian dollars. If you expect or have received support from another funder, please indicate the funds expected/received and the source/funder.
    • The proposal, timeline, and budget must be uploaded as a single document on the form.
  3. Resumé of applicant (maximum 2 pages).
  4. Description of significance of applicant’s previous research contributions, career aspirations and explained interest in child health (maximum 1 page [maximum 2 pages if prepared in French]).
  5. Information on the primary applicant’s unit or department head/director. Please note that the primary applicant cannot report themselves as the unit head; if the primary applicant is the unit head, they must provide the information of their superior/ the person they report to.
  6. Official letter of support from the applicant’s institution/department (maximum 1 page). This letter should confirm the primary applicant’s position and ability to execute the project, and show the institution’s/department’s willingness to support the project. This document must be letterheaded. Please note that if the primary applicant is the unit head, they must provide a letter of support from their superior/ the person they report to.
  7. If applicable, official letter of support from applicant’s local partner (maximum 1 page).
  8. Applicants resubmitting a proposal to the GCHP grants must attach a 500-word max document detailing how the reviewers' comments from the previous submission have been addressed.

The proposal can be submitted in teams of 2 to 5 members.
