M.A. Education & Society - Prospective Students

NEW APPLICATION POLICY:

Please note the following requirements for all MA Thesis students' Personal Statements:

  1. Applicants must identify two faculty members who might potentially act as their research SUPERVISOR. This information should be clearly indicated at the very top of their statement. It is not necessary to contact these POTENTIAL supervisors but to IDENTIFY two professors whose research area is of interest to you.
  2. The Personal Statement should also include a clearly articulated mention of the student’s research topic as well as the research trends and professional experiences that have led to the topic (3-4 paragraphs).

The M.A. in Education and Society encourages students to study educational issues manifested in cultural, historical, philosophical, economic and political contexts. The main focus of this program may take two different routes. One option would be in Culture, Values and Education which may focus on, for example, philosophy, art and aesthetics, values, spirituality and religion, gender issues or international and comparative education. The other main focus of this program may focus on Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum which emphasizes current perspectives on pedagogy and curriculum, teacher education, in- and out-of-school learning, practitioner research, and classroom practice. This M.A. program brings to bear diverse applied and critical theoretical perspectives including, for example, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, policy studies, gender studies, critical pedagogy, and multiliteracies.

NB: Please note that applications are accepted for the fall semester ONLY. There is no intake for the winter and summer semesters.

The thesis option is recommended for students interested in undertaking a more in-depth independent study or in moving on to a PhD upon completion of their Master's degree. The non-thesis option may be more appropriate if you are wishing to pursue the MA alongside full-time work or are primarily pursuing the degree for career advancement.

Eligibility

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  1. Possess an undergraduate degree.
  2. The minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is 3.0 out of a possible 4.0, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.2 out of 4.0 in the last two years of full-time studies.
  3. Demonstrate a clear motivation for pursuing a graduate degree in education and an interest in educational issues manifested in cultural, historical, philosophical, economic, and/or political contexts.
  4. For Thesis Only: Demonstrate an interest in learning about and conducting research.
  5. Students applying to the Math/Science concentration are expected to have:
  • A strong content background in mathematics or an area of science is needed for this program. It is recommended that candidates have a Bachelors and/or Masters degree in mathematics, a science discipline, or a related field. Equivalent experience in one of these areas may be considered in place of a degree. If you do not have the specified content background and degree, we ask that you explain, in your application materials, how your experiences have strengthened your mathematics or science content knowledge.
  • Elementary or secondary teaching or experience working in other learning environments (such as after-school programs, etc.) is desirable. This should be described in your application materials.

Admissions for all graduate level programs are done online, via uApply.Ìý Click on the red "Apply Now" icon to begin the process.

Next application deadline: 1st JanÌýfor FallÌýadmission. Applications submitted after this date will not be considered. The uApply system opens mid-September for the following school year.

Required Documents

  • A current working CV
  • A 1-2 page Personal Statement (Letter of Intent), specifying relevant academic and professional experience, particularly experience related to education.Ìý(max 2Ìýpages - Double Spaced, Times New Roman 12 font, 1 inch margins)
  • A copy of your unofficial transcripts from ALL previous university level studies (undergraduate and graduate).Ìý Official transcripts are required after students are officially admitted to the program.
  • Two letters of recommendation, Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a university-level instructor; the other may be from an administrator in an educationally relevant context.Ìý
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores Graduate eCalendarÌý (if applicable)
    • IELTS with a minimum overall band of 7.0; (with a minimum writing score of 7.0); or
    • TOEFL:iBT (Internet-based test) – total score of 92 with a minimum score of 22 each for the Writing and Speaking sections and a minimum of 20 each for the Reading and Listening sections and PBT (paper-based test) – 580
    • The Department reserves the right to evaluate the applicant's language proficiency before initial registration and at the time of application.

N.B. Applicants are required to submit their scores electronically. Paper reports are no longer accepted.
