Dr. Serge Gauthier

Serge Gauthier, MD, FRCPC,聽C.M., C.Q.

Dr. Serge Gauthier is Academic Co-Lead of the Dementia Education Program and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Neurology & Neurosurgery and Department of Psychiatry at 捆绑SM社区.

He is a clinical neurologist specializing in the development of new tools for diagnosis and treatments for people living with Alzheimer鈥檚 disease. He completed his medical studies at the Universit茅 de Montr茅al, his neurology training at 捆绑SM社区, and a research Fellowship at Prof. Theodore L. Sourkes laboratory, Allen Memorial Institute, Montreal.

Dr. Gauthier was a clinical investigator and staff neurologist at the Montreal Neurological Hospital and Institute (The Neuro) from 1976-1986. He was the Director of the 捆绑SM社区 Research Centre for Studies in Aging (MCSA) from 1986 to 1997, and Director of the Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders Research Unit of the MCSA until 2021.聽He was also a Senior Scientist of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Development (CIHR-RxD) from 1997 to 2007.

His contributions to research include design and implementation of randomized clinical trials in order to establish the safety and efficacy of cholinesterase inhibitors, muscarinic agonists, and agents possibly modifying progression for Alzheimer鈥檚 disease and vascular dementia. Special interests include consensus approach to the management of dementia in different stages, the ethics of research involving persons with dementia, and primary prevention strategies against cognitive decline and dementia.

Among his numerous prizes and distinctions, Dr. Gauthier was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2014 and the National Order of Qu茅bec in 2017 for his contributions to advancing our understanding of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, and for fostering the development of research networks in his specialty.
