The À¦°óSMÉçÇø Department of Surgery, Section of Colon & Rectal Surgery offers a two-year, Royal College accredited residency training program in Colon & Rectal surgery. The two years of the residency program include one year of clinical training and one year of research to satisfy the Royal College eligibility for certification. Residents who complete the program are also eligible to write the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery (ABCRS) exams if they are American Board of Surgery (ABS) certified.

The À¦°óSMÉçÇø Section of Colon & Rectal Surgery offers a high-volume exposure to benign and malignant colorectal diseases. The training takes place at two sites, the À¦°óSMÉçÇø Health Centre and the Jewish General Hospital.

There is an emphasis on colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and anorectal disease. Procedures include Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM), anorectal physiology testing and surgical procedures, colonoscopy and advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery. Opportunities include patient evaluation and management, critical decision making, operative skills, clinical research, residency and hospital administration, medical student and resident teaching, and a structured teaching program and conferences.

Priority will be given to candidates who are graduates of an accredited General Surgery Program with Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification, or those eligible to sit the exams prior to starting the residency program, as well as candidates who are eligible to sit for the American Boards of Surgery (ABS) exam. International applicants who are not eligible to sit for the Royal College or ABS exams will also be considered. In addition, applicants should be eligible for licensing as a resident with the Collège des Médecins du Quebec.
