Even in a year that venture capitalists鈥 go-to bank collapsed, and venture capital funding slowed to a trickle, the disruptive power of startups has never been clearer. The 2023 CNBC Disruptor 50 list was the eleventh iteration of the list, and the top spot should come as no surprise. The generative artificial intelligence company OpenAI is the maker of ChatGPT, and no new technological application has created more buzz since the dawn of social media 鈥 or even the web itself.
Five offices across disciplines and campuses embrace sustainability at work and beyond through the Sustainable Workplace Certification program

Why is being overqualified for a sought-after job at a desirable workplace seen as a drawback? Despite having prestigious educations and impressive work credentials, these candidates get turned down by hiring managers, often before they even get an interview.
Gen Z and younger millennials want their work to have meaning and impact, and are determined to be their authentic selves at work. This is a bit of a departure from the work-life split preferred by their predecessors, but it is not the first time that generation gaps have affected workplace culture. To understand how these gaps can be bridged 鈥 and propose some techniques to do it -- Prof. Karl Moore conducted interviews with workers from younger and older generations.
Office workers adopted remote work on a massive scale during the pandemic, and many of them only want to return to the office on a limited basis. This was a major issue in the spring 2023 strike by the Public Service Alliance of Canada. In the union鈥檚 new contract, remote work requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. This makes an amount of sense, according to Desautels Prof. Jean-Nicolas Reyt. "Some jobs do require you to be on-site, but at the end of the day, it has to be case-by-case," Reyt told CBC News.
As chief of the Service de police de l鈥橝gglom茅ration de Longueuil (SPAL), Fady Dagher (EMBA鈥12) carried out a real revolution in the force, and he has now taken the reins of the Service de Police de la Ville de Montr茅al (SPVM) as its new chief, writes 捆绑SM社区 Alumni News. In Longueil, Dagher took the concept of 鈥渃ommunity policing鈥 one step further by creating a 鈥減artnership police force鈥 that works hand-in-hand with social services. Dagher credits 捆绑SM社区 Desautels Prof.
To understand the impact of the climate crisis on younger generations, empathy is a place to start. It is a necessary part of confronting, but on its own, it is not enough. Desautels lecturer Anita Nowak (BA'97, BCom'97, PhD'11) recently published her book聽Purposeful Empathy, which is described as聽an inspiring and powerful read by Quebec MNA D茅sir茅e McGraw in a review for Policy Magazine. 鈥淭his is a book that helps middle-aged people like me understand, collaborate and ultimately innovate with the next generation of Millennials and Gen Z,鈥 McGraw says.
奥丑别苍听Lisa Cohen聽moved to New York City in 1984 to work for Vanity Fair magazine, it seemed like a dream job. But the reality didn鈥檛 stack up to her expectations. Though the work was sometimes interesting, Cohen found the detailed fact-checks that she was assigned tedious. Still, she stayed in the magazine industry for five years before pursuing a business degree. That鈥檚 Cohen鈥檚 personal experience with 鈥榞lossy work鈥. Positions like that Vanity Fair role may appear glamorous, but often have serious downsides, like low pay and dull work.
捆绑SM社区 Desautels has yet again been recognized by the University鈥檚 Sustainable Workplace Certification program, an award-winning program from the Office of Sustainability that challenges the 捆绑SM社区 community to foster sustainable workplaces through individual and collective practices. The union representing WestJet pilots has voted in favour of a job action, and that leaves air passengers playing a guessing game. The pilots can鈥檛 strike until May 16 at the earliest, and for those who already hold tickets with the airline, it鈥檚 a 鈥榳ait and see鈥 situation鈥, said Prof. Karl Moore to CityNews Vancouver. A vote in favour of a job action is sometimes just a negotiating tactic, but the possibility could push more travellers toward Air Canada.
About thirty managers and entrepreneurs attended a recent 捆绑SM社区 Mini-MBA course in Matane, Quebec. It was the first time this type of course has been delivered in one of Quebec鈥檚 regions beyond Montreal and was the brainchild of local businessman Fran莽ois Rioux (MBA鈥10). 鈥淲hen you are on-location, you can see the energy and better understand the stakes, the challenges, and the successes,鈥 says Eric Saine, the Executive Director of 捆绑SM社区 Executive Education. That鈥檚 exactly what we wanted to do at 捆绑SM社区 鈥 to be a bridge that links communities.
