The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) this fall that Professor Andrea Bjorklund has been named its first Scholar in Residence.
Above all, I remember his laughter and the mischievous twinkle in his eye. He would say something uniquely insightful, and immediately cover it up with a chuckle. Only later would one realize the depth of his learning, as layers upon layers of wisdom emerged from a casual conversation in the hallway.
On September 11, during the International Palliative Care conference in Montreal, Professor Margaret Somerville received the 2014 Jean Echlin Award for Ethics in Palliative Care, sponsored by the deVeber Institute for Bioethics and Social Research.
The Institute wished to honour Professor Somerville鈥檚 career, stating that 鈥渟he has been a bold beacon of reason in both her academic work and the public square against legalizing euthanasia, arguing for better access to high quality palliative care, especially pain management in caring for dying people.鈥
The Faculty of Law and the Stikeman Chair in Tax Law are pleased to announce the creation of the Spiegel Sohmer Tax Policy Colloquium, to be hosted annually at 捆绑SM社区 starting this Fall 2014 term.
The Spiegel Sohmer Tax Policy Colloquium has been made possible by a generous grant from the law firm Spiegel Sohmer, for the purpose of fostering an academic community in which learning and scholarship may flourish.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Hoi Kong has accepted to serve the Faculty as Associate Dean (Academic) for a two-year term starting September 1st, 2014.
As Dean Daniel Jutras indicated, 鈥淗oi has agreed to take on this important task as we begin a most important stage in our undergraduate program review and overhaul.聽 Hoi鈥檚 commitment to our students is undeniable (as attested by the John W. Durnford Award he received last year), and his creativity and rigor in thinking about pedagogy and curriculum will be precious over the course of the next two years.鈥
Professor Andrea Bjorkland, the L. Yves Fortier Chair in International Arbitration and International Commercial Law, was delighted to receive more than 80 submissions from scholars and junior practitioners affiliated with more than 50 institutions for the 2014 Nappert Prize in International Arbitration. Authors hailed from around the world, with every continent save Antarctica represented.聽
We are pleased to announce that Professor Robert Leckey has been appointed Director of the Paul-Andr茅 Cr茅peau Center for Private and Comparative Law, for a three-year term beginning August 1, 2014.聽
It is with sadness that the Faculty announces the death of Professor聽William Tetley, C.M., Q.C., LL.L., who passed away, surrounded by his family, on July 1, 2014.
A world-renowned expert in maritime law, Professor Tetley led an extremely full life.

This spring, BCL/LLB student Peter Grbac received an Arthur C. Helton Fellowship from the American Society of International Law (ASIL) to help support his 2014 summer internship in India.
The Faculty is pleased to announce the appointment of Lionel Smith (first picture) to the Sir William Macdonald Chair. Established in 1895, the Macdonald Chair is one of the oldest endowed positions at 捆绑SM社区. In addition, Professor Smith was also selected for a Killam Research Fellowship in March 2014 in recognition of his outstanding research on fiduciary obligations and conflicts of interest.
A teacher, first and foremost, Roderick A. Macdonald will be remembered as one of the most important scholars and thinkers in 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 history. He was a mentor and inspiration to generations of students and law professors, and a transformative force at the Faculty of Law, the University, in Canadian society, and in the broader world.
Old Chancellor Day Hall, the Faculty of Law鈥檚 most iconic building, is closing at the end of June for 16 months as we undertake much-needed renovations to upgrade the building鈥檚 heating, electrical systems, plumbing, windows and more, while respecting its historical features.
Faculty and staff who were in OCDH have been relocated either to New Chancellor Day Hall and 3674-3690 Peel Street, or to rented office space near 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 Roddick Gates at 2001 捆绑SM社区 College Avenue, suite 750.
