They may not know it yet, but 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 student teachers are getting a big boost from a kindred spirit.

The late Mary Marsh, DipEd鈥42, a Grade 1听teacher at Rosedale School in Montreal for most of her career, has left more than $4.8 million in her will to support students in the Faculty of Education through a suite of听awards听鈥 an investment that couldn鈥檛 have come at a better time for a profession deeply marked by the pandemic.

A new partnership between 捆绑SM社区鈥檚 Faculty of Education and Trafalgar School for Girls 鈥 known as the CoLab 鈥 aims to advance collaborative research that will address the evolving needs of both educators and students. Unlike traditional laboratory schools at Oxford, Columbia, UCLA and the University of Chicago, which operate as an adjunct to a university, this new venture will be a true partnership, the first of its kind in Canada.

Faculty of Education alumna, Tami Zuckerman (B.Ed鈥02), was recently featured in 捆绑SM社区 Alumni鈥檚 鈥淐ome & Be Inspired鈥 webcast, sharing thoughts on 鈥淪howing Up for Yourself鈥.

Tami prides herself on being one of the Founders of VarageSale as well as being a busy mom, and many of the skills she learned as a B.Ed are transferable to both business and parenting.

With the vast majority of courses now being offered remotely, the fall semester is off to a good start. Faculty and staff have begun working on-campus on a rotating basis to provide Education students with the academic and administrative support they need. Ensuring student safety and offering a high-quality education will remain my top priorities as we move through a semester like no other.

In conversation with 捆绑SM社区 Education Dean, Dilson Rassier, and Associate Dean of Academic Programs, Alain Breuleux, notable alum and President, Texas Instruments - Education Technology, Peter Balyta (BEd'94, Phd'07) will host a conversation about how technology plays a vital role in advancing education. This much-anticipated webinar will address topics such as diverse learning needs, mental health and inclusivity in the classroom, as well as the significant impact that technology is currently having on teaching and learning around the world.

With the changing landscape of Canadian schools, student teachers pursuing their Bachelor of Education at 捆绑SM社区 are being offered the opportunity to specialize in teaching French Immersion. 鈥淛ust because someone is fluent in French does not mean they can teach French as a Second Language,鈥 says Dr. Sheryl Smith-Gilman, Assistant Director of Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs.

Meet Sarah Mohamed, a Master鈥檚 of Education student pursuing studies in the Learning Sciences with the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology. With an undergraduate background of culture and politics (Georgetown University School of Foreign Service), Sarah studied how history, identity, culture and beliefs shape social policy.

On August 26th, 捆绑SM社区 Alumni partnered with 捆绑SM社区 Education to present the webinar, 鈥淓d Tech Talk: In-Class and At-Home Learning During COVID-19鈥 for more than 145 audience members.

Moderated by Master's student, Sara Mohamed, Assistant Professor Dr. Adam Dub茅 and Adjunct Professor , enlightened us about ways to facilitate and maximize learning through the use of software, websites, and apps.

Student health and wellness is a key priority for 捆绑SM社区. Through its Faculty of Education, 捆绑SM社区 is focused on helping students develop the mental health resilience they need to thrive in today鈥檚 demanding and stressful world.

In honour of World Mental Health Day, the Faculty and its key partners will share a series of best practices leading up to October 10th to raise awareness about this global issue. Stay tuned for more information about how you can help build mental health resilience among our global community.

Congratulations to 捆绑SM社区 Education alumnus Jamie Glass (B.Ed 鈥98) for being the 15th recipient of the Ontario Justice Education Network Chief Justices鈥 Award!

Established by the Chief Justices of Ontario Court of Appeal, Superior Court of Justice and Ontario Court of Justice, this award recognizes an individual who has made an exceptional contribution in promoting public understanding and dialogue in support of a responsive and inclusive justice system.

With a mission to advance knowledge and apply it to the development of human potential over one's lifespan, research and teaching at the Faculty of Education encompasses both the hard sciences and the social sciences. As a kinesiology graduate student, Samantha Quinn combined the two to explore how nutrition affects the quality of muscles.

Along with 25 of her 捆绑SM社区 peers, Dr. Marie-Claude Geoffroy (Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology) was recently awarded a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) for her outstanding work in Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. This major national honour is awarded to exceptional emerging researchers and leaders in their chosen fields, as acknowledged by their peers.
