Annelies Verellen is a Ph.D. student specializing in early modern Dutch and Flemish art under the supervision of Dr. Angela Vanhaelen. She examines (self)reflections in early modern Netherlandish art, focusing on the pictorial history of women and mirrors and the complexities embedded in the motif of a woman beholding her reflection in a mirror. She is interested in how early modern women navigated the rigid behavioural prescriptions for women vis-Ã -vis their artistic modes of production in the Low Countries.
Prior to entering À¦°óSMÉçÇø’s doctoral program, Annelies obtained her MA degree in Art History ’23 under the supervision of Dr. Stephanie Dickey at Queen’s University. For her MA thesis, she examined self-portraits by six Dutch and Flemish women and studied how the uniquely feminine iconography of the Allegory of Painting influenced and inspired women’s self-representation. Her MA research was supported by SSHRC CGS-M, the Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement, and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship.
