Psychology (Faculty of Arts)

Overview

Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour, and includes the examination of conscious and unconscious phenomena, feeling and thought. This interdisciplinary field crosses social and biological sciences.

As a social science, psychology examines the social nature of human beings and the influence that culture, group membership, and relationships have on individual personality, thought, and behavior. The study of psychological problems often involves knowledge drawn from other disciplines such as biology, physiology, linguistics, sociology, philosophy, and mathematics. Psychology is an excellent field to pursue your interests in human behaviour and the mind.

Please note that holding a B.A. or B.Sc. in Psychology does not qualify you to practice psychology professionally. If you wish to pursue graduate studies in psychology, and to eventually practice, you are advised to complete the honours program, or a major in Psychology with a minor in Behavioural Science.

Careers

The B.A. or B.Sc. with a major or honours degree in psychology is not a professional qualification. It does not qualify you to carry on professional work in psychology.

The major alone will be of interest to those who wish to pursue a broader education and those who plan to apply for multidisciplinary graduate programs, like cognitive science, criminology, or the social studies or medicine.
