Program Requirements
This concentration is a 45-credit, three-term (Fall, Winter, and Fall) program based on a design-intensive professional curriculum and centred on the design studio. Students work in a traditional studio format for the first two terms and with individual advisers in the terminal design project course in the third (Fall) term. Complementary and elective courses are organized to provide flexibility in individual program design and create opportunities to both explore the discipline and focus on subject areas related to research and design interests.

ARCH 551 Urban Design and Planning (3 credits)
Overview
Architecture : Fundamentals of city-building in Canada relative to municipal, regional, and provincial actions used to guide urban growth and development. Contemporary urban design in major metropolitan centres as shaped by legal, political, and cultural realities. Current preoccupations in citybuilding: reurbanisation and adaptive reuse of infrastructure, collaborative multi-stakeholder projects, strategic initiatives, changing relationships between professional experts and grassroots actors. Introduction to specific aspects of practice: public participation and community engagement; land development and real estate; project feasibility and implementation; policy monitoring and evaluation; emergent city-building regimes.

ARCH 680 Field Sketching (2 credits)
Overview
Architecture : Seven days of supervised field sketching in selected locations outside Montreal. The course reinforces traditional skills in observation, notebook recording and architectural sketching. Students are encouraged to approach the subject critically and thematically, and to treat sketching as a mechanism for documenting experience and expressing their knowledge of the environment.

Urban Planning : Basic concepts of real estate and property rights and how these are valued. The specificities of property markets and their segmentation. The paradox of realestate uniqueness. Actors and processes of realestate development and investment in practical terms (proforma analysis, investment analysis, leases and property management) and broader terms (institutional investors, financialization). Segmentation of development processes among local, supralocal and international actors, including consultants.
