CASN 2023: Educating nurses on EDI through SBNH Symposium
A Symposium entitled “Educating nurses on EDI through SBNH” will be presented at the upcoming CASN Canadian Nursing Education Conference 2023 as part of Professor Laurie Gottlieb’s "Transforming Nurses’ Work Environments Through a Strengths-Based Leadership and Management Training Program" Healthy and Productive Work Partnership Grant. Research team members along with ISoN faculty, will host the Symposium which will occur on May 29-30, 2023, in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The topic of this panel discussion will be exploring EDI through the SBNH lens as it relates to nursing education and the workforce. The learning objective is to share how SBNH can be used as a lens to educate undergraduate and postgraduate nurses on the importance of EDI-focused nursing spaces.Jackie Grigis, Research Assistant and FMHS PhD student will be presenting the results from the EDI component of the Partnership Grant, ISoN faculty member Rosetta Antonacci will be presenting on her experience integrating EDI into her undergraduate courses and Project Collaborator Erin Ziegler, Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, Toronto Metropolitain University, on linking EDI and SNBH-L frameworks.
Numerous co-authors were included in the abstract submission including ISoN faculty Rosalind Garland, Caroline Marchioni and Norma Ponzoni and grant faculty Kimberley Manning from Concordia University and Alessandra Borromeo from Princess Grace Hospital, UK.
Abstract
Nursing is more diverse than it has ever been, yet the rate of growth is slow. There are several systemic barriers in place preventing some nurses from entering and staying in nursing in Canada and beyond. A lack of understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is one such barrier. For example, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario recently released their call-to-action to tackle anti-black racism in Ontario (and Canada) and the majority of the recommendations relate to education and support of future Black nurses in Canada as well as their non-Black colleagues and leaders. Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare (SBNH) is both a philosophy and a value-driven approach to guide educators, clinicians, and leaders. SBNH aims to transform the healthcare system by humanizing healthcare through knowledgeable and compassionate care. The topic of this panel discussion will be exploring EDI through the SBNH lens as it relates to nursing education and the workforce. The learning objective of this panel is to share how SBNH can be used as a lens to educate undergraduate and postgraduate nurses on the importance of EDI-focused nursing spaces. There will be three topics, each with their own presentation. Topic 1 will describe what SBNH (and SBNH-L(eadership)) is and how it relates to EDI. As an introductory topic, we will describe SBNH and how its 4 foundations and 8 values relate to EDI in nursing education and leadership. The introduction will be followed by two presentations on the topic of EDI through an SBNH lens at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as a commitment to EDI requires a lifelong educational approach. Topic 2 will provide an example of an undergraduate training exercise which asked students to rethink their approach to a patient situation as it related to EDI. Specifically, this assignment invited students to recognize the potential changes in resource access and necessary alterations to the clinical management of specific cases to ensure culturally informed care and equitable practice. Finally, topic 3 will provide an example of a postgraduate training program on SBNH-L focused on EDI. Postgraduate nurses were provided SBNH-L training which included a dedicated module on EDI. The nurses were later invited to share their experience with the module as well as their personal views on EDI through a series of semistructured interviews.
