Dr. Tina Montreuil, clinical (school) psychologist and associate professor in the department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, was called upon for her expertise in child and adolescent mental health to comment on the recent rapport issued by l’Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ). The report highlights the marked rise in mental disorders among high school students.

Dr. Montreuil provides expert opinion on what could explain these increases among children and teens, but also provides insights on prevention opportunities that can arise from these findings.

For Vincent Wong, life truly is a journey.

As a Loran Scholar, the Vancouverite moved across the country in 2021 to pursue his B.Sc. Honours in Neuroscience at ��SM��. He was drawn by The Neuro (The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital), Canada’s largest neuroscience research centre.

In the summer of 2022, Wong traveled to Yellowknife to conduct a research project on the unique health-care challenges in the North, an experience that would shift his career trajectory.

Saskatchewan’s first Centrosaurus and Citipes elegans fossils discovered by ��SM�� researchers

Paleontologists and students from ��SM�� have documented Saskatchewan's first confirmed fossil specimens of Centrosaurus, a horned dinosaur species closely related to Triceratops.

The search, conducted in Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park along the South Saskatchewan River, also unearthed a rare mix of dinosaur and marine fossils, shedding light on a dinosaur fauna which existed on the edge of an ancient sea at a time of rising sea levels long before humans roamed the earth.

The Gibbs Lab at ��SM�� is looking for adults aged 50 and above, diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes to participate in a research study.

Participation involves one audio-recorded interview conducted via Microsoft Teams or by phone.

The study aims to identify preferences, information needs, and perceived barriers related to exercise for the management of bone health in older adults with diabetes. Adults over 50 with diabetes are often unaware of their increased risk of bone fractures, which can lead to disability, hospitalization, and significant healthcare costs.

A new study on songbirds sheds light on the power of social interaction to facilitate learning, insights that potentially apply to human development.

��SM�� researchers discovered that zebra finches deprived of early social experiences could still form strong bonds with a partner later in life. Once placed into cohabitation with a male, females that had never heard a mating song before could quickly develop a preference for his melody.

After a hiatus of about a decade, the ��SM�� Computer Science Summer Camp once again welcomed students from Montreal high schools and CEGEPs to the downtown campus this summer.

The four packed days of talks, hands-on activities and coding sessions were all intended to strengthen students’ interests in coding and coding competitions, and to contribute to the development of computer science talent in Quebec.

In a new article published today in Nature Communications, a team of ��SM�� researchers led by Professor Alanna Watt of the Department of Biology examines the spatial organization of neurons in the cerebellar cortex. The findings offer new insight into how information is integrated in the cerebellum and shed light on the role of the often-overlooked cerebellar nuclei.

Shifts in the ranges of mosquitoes and disease-bearing ticks and bats are introducing illnesses such as malaria and Lyme disease into regions where health-care systems are unprepared. Movements of commercially important fish from one jurisdiction to another are shifting job opportunities and causing trade disputes.

Allie Vibert Douglas made history when she earned her PhD at ��SM��.

It was 1926 – a time when higher education wasn’t an option for most women.

By then, Douglas already had a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science from ��SM�� – and had been named a member of the Order of the British Empire for her wartime service. With her PhD, she became the first Canadian woman to obtain a doctorate in astrophysics.
