The relation between self-criticism and social comparison between people and across individuals’ life domains

I’m Sorin, and this year I worked under the supervision of Dr. Zuroff and Dr. Clegg. My project looked at the relation between self-criticism and social comparison between people and across individuals’ life domains. It is known that self-criticism can affect the process of social comparison. During this process, individuals either engage in upward comparisons to verify their self-views, resulting in unfavourable outcomes, or downward comparisons to self-enhance, leading to favourable outcomes. Overall, our findings demonstrated that individuals high in self-criticism at the between-persons and domain-level engaged in more upward social comparisons, suggesting that they verify their negative self-views.
