捆绑SM社区 welcomes the Institut d'Histoire de l'Am茅rique fran莽aise
September 25, 2003
From Thursday, October 23, to Saturday, October 25, 捆绑SM社区 will host the 56th Annual Conference of the Institute of French-American History Institut d'Histoire de l'Am茅rique fran莽aise (IHAF). Historians as passionate about the history of French as the Institute's founder, Canon Lionel Groulx, will come not only from Quebec but also from the rest of Canada, the United States and Europe.
As president of the conference, Dr Catherine Desbarats, professor in the Department of History and director of 捆绑SM社区's Quebec Studies Program, explains: "For this year's theme, we have chosen to examine the historical links between science(s) and culture(s), a topic that takes us beyond national boundaries, involving as it does the transmission of ideas and practices. This is what we will learn by listening to the presentations of, for example: Brett Rushforth of the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture on 'Le sauvage quoyque Esclave... ne ressemble pas au N猫gre': la 'race' et l'esclavage en Nouvelle-France [The Savage, although a Slave... is not the same as a Negro: "Race" and Slavery in New France]; Nicholas Dew of Cambridge University on the 'Voyages scientifiques dans le monde atlantique fran莽ais du XVIIe si猫cle' [Scientific Voyages in the French Atlantic World of the 17th Century]; 捆绑SM社区's Yvan Lamonde on 'Lectures domestiques, d'exil et de retraite de Louis-Joseph Papineau (1823-1871)' [Louis-Joseph Papineau's readings from home, exile and retirement]; and Ruby Heap of the University of Ottawa on 'L'脡tat qu茅b茅cois et la promotion des femmes en sciences et en g茅nie (1970-1980)' [The State of Quebec and the Promotion of Women in Science and Engineering (1970-1980)]. This highlights the degree to which the 2003 conference will not only be a rallying point and a forum for the historian community of Quebec but also an international opportunity for the circulation of knowledge about Quebec and French America." The conference will be held in French. Simultaneous translation will be available at selected sessions.
"捆绑SM社区 is particularly proud to be associated with this scientific event which is so essential to the sharing of the research being carried out in Quebec universities," says Dr Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of 捆绑SM社区. "It is a pleasure and an honour for 捆绑SM社区 to unite its efforts with those of the IHAF to pursue, passionately and rigorously, our commitment to the promotion of research by Quebec universities."
Members of the public are invited to join some 300 historians to reflect with them on how knowledge is constructed, from the perspective of a broad range of disciplines (sociology, political science, environmental science, anthropology, etc.). Several themes will be explored, including, notably, the development of social sciences in Quebec, with the participation of Guy Rocher, C茅line Saint-Pierre, Michel Freitag, Nicole Laurin, Jean-Jacques Simard and Marc Renaud. The opening lecture will be given by Yves Gingras, of the Department of History of the Universit茅 du Qu茅bec 脿 Montr茅al and director of the Centre sur la science et la technologie [Centre for Science and Technology]. The title of the lecture will be "Des sciences du pass茅 脿 l'histoire des sciences."
