Introduction to Pediatric Sleep Disorders to the Non-Sleep Specialist

30% of otherwise healthy children have sleep disorders. Sleep disorders cause or worsen physical and behavioral problems, inattention, poor academic performance, and emotional dysregulation. Abundant evidence indicates that the negative impacts of sleep disorders can be significantly reduced by effective treatment. However, access to interventional opportunities that would improve pediatric sleep disorders is lacking in Quebec and around the world. Significant progress towards increasing access to pediatric sleep care could be made if professionals that assist children and adolescents acquire awareness and a better understanding of pediatric sleep care. Thus, the objective of the one-day workshop is to introduce professionals who treat youths to knowledge that would allow them to recognize common pediatric sleep disorders and promote the sleep health of the youths they serve.

Target Audience

The workshop is aimed at professionals involved in the education, assessment or care of children and adolescents' - including (but not limited to) healthcare professionals (family doctors, psychiatrists. pediatricians, nurses, physical or speech therapists), educators, school mental health teams, educational advisors and special needs consultants, neuropsychologists,Ìýpsychologists andÌýsocial workers.

This free virtual event will take place on World Sleep Day (March 15, 2024) dedicated to the commitment to take action to promote sleep health and raise awareness of its importance. Sleep health advocates across the world will take actions in their local communities, clinics, and countries to raise awareness of sleep health.

Course Topics

Educational sessions, led by experts in the field of pediatric sleep, will explain the relationship between sleep and youths' health, mental health, and academic performance. Additionally, they will review key information regarding practical approaches to addressing common pediatric sleep disorders. The closing keynote will address the impact of sleep health promotion on strengtheningÌýyouth resiliency, for which he received the 2023 American Academy of Child Adolescent’s Psychiatry Irving Philips Award for Prevention.

Overall Program Learning Objectives

By the end of this virtual event, participants will be able to:

  • Appreciate the impact of healthy sleep on children and adolescents’ physical health, emotional well-being and educational success
  • Acquire practical approaches to addressing common pediatric sleep disorders
  • Match identified sleep issues with an appropriate referral pathwayÌý
  • Appreciate the rationale for the incorporation of sleep assessment and sleep optimization strategies into children and adolescents educational and psychological success plans
