Reflections from the Visible Women Conference 2024

The Visible Women Conference (VWC) 2024 was a transformative experience, not just professionally but also personally. In two intensive days, I encountered insights that resonated deeply with my journey and ambitions, especially through the stories and guidance of the incredible speakers. Three moments stood out for me, each with a valuable takeaway that I’ll carry forward.

The first was Bibigi Haile’s talk on overcoming imposter syndrome. As the founder of VWC, she brought a unique authenticity to her talk, openly discussing the internal doubts many women face, especially those of us navigating predominantly male fields. When she explained the importance of challenging the “I don’t deserve this” mentality, it felt like she was speaking directly to me. I often find myself wondering if I am truly deserving of my achievements. Despite being passionate and capable, I sometimes fear that my flaws will be exposed. Bibigi’s words reminded me that I am not alone in these feelings and that confidence and self-validation are crucial steps in my journey. She encouraged us to view our accomplishments as proof of our worth, which has motivated me to approach challenges with a sense of ownership and pride.

Shari Graydon’s presentation on “OMG – What if I really am the best person?” was equally impactful. She emphasized, “Best person is not the bar. The test is whether you can add value.” Shari’s words were a refreshing reminder to focus on the substance of my contributions rather than constantly comparing myself to an elusive standard of “the best.” Her advice about making our visibility bigger than ourselves struck a chord. It encouraged me to use my skills and platform to elevate those around me, building a culture of shared success and community impact. This mindset shift has inspired me to look beyond personal achievements and consider how to contribute more effectively to my team and community.

During the panel session on “When Success Meets Visibility,” I was captivated by the discussion about the rewards and challenges of being visible. The advice to “take my place because I belong here and take space afterwards” was especially profound. It’s easy to doubt our place in professional spaces, especially when we feel different or less experienced. However, hearing this reinforced the importance of self-assurance and the value I bring by simply being present and willing to contribute. I left the session determined to embrace opportunities more assertively, knowing I had earned my place.

Finally, I was moved by an example shared on the second day about the actress Ma Rainey, who fought for her worth in a challenging situation. This inspired me to advocate for my value and to stand firm in situations where I may be overlooked or underestimated. Seeing a real-life example of someone demanding their worth gave me a model to emulate as I face challenges in my professional life.

In all, I will say that the VWC 2024 experience was empowering and reaffirming. I am motivated to overcome self-doubt, focus on the value I bring, and stand confidently in my journey ahead.
