Authoritarian turn and dehumanization: roots of the fall of the Peruvian democracy

Thursday, April 13, 2023 12:30to14:00
Arts Building Room 160 (Arts Council Room), 853 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal, QC, H3A 0G5, CA

After a long-standing political crisis, on December 2022, Peru's government has once again taken an authoritarian turn. As a result, the political rights of mobilized citizens have been suppressed, giving rise to a period of acute turmoil.聽 60 people have lost their lives, at least 48 of them due to State violence. To legitimize repression, the State has been using a sustained strategy of criminalization of protesters, particularly targeting grassroots activists and Indigenous movements. This panel will analyze the criminalization and consequent dehumanization of racialized citizens at the margins of the State, attending to the role it plays in the decomposition of Peruvian democracy. In doing so, it will speak to a broader concern with the rise of authoritarianism in Latin America.

With panelists (participating via Zoom):

  • Cecilia M茅ndez Gastelumendi (Ph.D.), History department, the University of California Santa Barbara
  • Kerly Garavito, economista, activista pol铆tica y miembro del colectivo Ruray
