As the Dean of the Faculty of Education, I am averse to calling those institutions “schools”. Schools are a place to advance learning, to open one’s mind to new ideas and diverse opinions; to mentor and collaborate with each child so they become the best they can be throughout their lives. Schools are where we better ourselves through insightful human relations, collaborations and nurturing mentorships.
Mon, 27 Sep 2021 21:07:24 +0000 Messages 16832 at /indigenous Elham Emami (Dean, Faculty of Dentistry) /indigenous/article/national-day-truth-and-reconciliation/elham-emami
What does Reconciliation mean to you personally and as Dean of a faculty and the discipline(s) it represents?

To me, as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Reconciliation means reaching out to Indigenous communities, acknowledging the discrimination that they have faced, learning from them

and seeking their collaboration to bring positive changes in many areas including education, outreach and community services.

What do you think is needed for Reconciliation to succeed?
Mon, 27 Sep 2021 21:00:30 +0000 Messages 16831 at /indigenous Yolande Chan (Dean, Desautels Faculty of Management) /indigenous/article/national-day-truth-and-reconciliation/yoland-chan
What does Reconciliation mean to you personally and as Dean of a faculty and the discipline(s) it represents?
Mon, 27 Sep 2021 20:55:54 +0000 Messages 16829 at /indigenous David Eidelman (Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) /indigenous/article/national-day-truth-and-reconciliation/david-eidelman-dean-faculty-medicine-and-health-sciences
In September 2020, when Joyce Echaquan of the Atikamekw Nation of Manawan tragically died while in a hospital’s care, we were very painfully reminded of the ugly pervasiveness of systemic racism and discrimination in our society, including in our health care systems. The past year also saw the discovery of more than 5,000 graves of Indigenous children who were sent to residential or boarding schools in Canada and the United States.
Thu, 30 Sep 2021 17:57:45 +0000 Messages 16873 at /indigenous Nico Trocmé (Faculty) /indigenous/article/national-day-truth-and-reconciliation/nico-trocme-faculty
What does Reconciliation mean to you personally?

Acknowledging our complicity in the forced removal of children from their families and communities.

What do you think is needed for Reconciliation to succeed?

Compensation and public education.

What is your personal pledge of action(s) to take part in that process of Reconciliation?

Use my connections, my position and my expertise to support First Nations organizations advocacy.

Nico Trocmé

SM Faculty
Thu, 30 Sep 2021 15:44:17 +0000 Messages 16869 at /indigenous Shari Brotman (Faculty) /indigenous/article/national-day-truth-and-reconciliation/shari-brotman-faculty
What does Reconciliation mean to you personally?

Reconciliation to me as a non-Indigenous person means making a commitment to listening, learning and recognizing my biases.

What do you think is needed for Reconciliation to succeed?

Commitment, compassion, understanding, solidarity, acting to eradicate colonialism.

What is your personal pledge of action(s) to take part in that process of Reconciliation?
Thu, 30 Sep 2021 15:38:46 +0000 Messages 16866 at /indigenous Akshay Gopalakrishnan (Student) /indigenous/article/national-day-truth-and-reconciliation/akshay-gopalakrishnan-student
What does Reconciliation mean to you personally?

To stop seeing people as commodities and judge them based on one's personal bias.

What do you think is needed for Reconciliation to succeed?

To acknowledge and educate people about the way of life and wisdom from different cultures/religion.

What is your personal pledge of action(s) to take part in that process of Reconciliation?

Go about doing my duties as a student and ensure that people in my circle also treat everyone equally.
Thu, 30 Sep 2021 15:10:33 +0000 Messages 16862 at /indigenous Nicole Ives (Faculty) /indigenous/article/national-day-truth-and-reconciliation/nicole-ives-faculty
What does Reconciliation mean to you personally?
