Microbiology (PhD)

Program Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Microbiology offered by the Department of Natural Resource Sciences in the Faculty of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences is a research-intensive program that emphasizes tailored and hands-on learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in literature review, critical thinking, and scientific communication to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.

Keywords: microbial ecology, microbial diversity, microbial genetics, bioremediation, infections, antibiotics, bacterial physiology, bacterial genetics and genomics, plant-microbe interactions, and bioinformatics.

Unique Program Features

  • The program offers specialized knowledge ranging from the study of microbial diversity in extreme environments, either natural or man-induced, to the role of microbes in managed ecosystems, such as in agriculture and forests;
  • Some Faculty members study various aspects of the use of microorganisms for biodegradation and bioremediation of contaminated sites and have even started recently examining Earth-based systems as models of extraterrestrial ones in the emerging field of Astrobiology;
  • The Department is affiliated with the Lyman Entomological Museum and Research Laboratory, the Molson Nature Reserve, the Morgan Arboretum, and the Ecomuseum of the St. Lawrence Valley Natural History Society;
  • Graduates pursue careers in academia, government agencies, and industry.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
