Art History (M.A.)

Program Description

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Art History (Thesis) offered by the Department of Art History & Communications in the Faculty of Arts is a research-intensive program that emphasizes interactive and tailored learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in original thinking, critical reading, and research dissemination to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.

The program may also be taken with the Gender and Women's Studies option with required coursework in gender and women's studies. The student's MA thesis must be on a topic that significantly engages with issues of gender and/or women and/or feminism.

Unique Program Features

  • Students benefit from access and internship and employment opportunities at the 捆绑SM社区 Visual Arts Collection (VAC), Rare Books and Special Collections in the 捆绑SM社区 Library, Osler Medical Library, the McCord Museum of Canadian History (houses the 捆绑SM社区 Archives), and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The archives and exhibits of the Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Biblioth猫que et Archives Nationales de Qu茅bec also offer grants and research opportunities;
  • Faculty members specialize in fields including Medieval, Renaissance; Early Modern; Modern, Contemporary, Canadian and Indigenous, and East Asian. Areas of specialization include the visual and material culture of medicine, museum studies, the history of collecting, race and representation, and art historical methodologies, notably Feminism, Postcolonialism and Transcultural studies, and Queer Theory.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0聽GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA; for this program, the minimum GPA is 3.3 out of 4.0.
  • English-language proficiency
