Education's New Canada Research Chairs: Victoria Talwar & Marie-H茅l猫ne Pennestri

The Government of Canada awarded 捆绑SM社区 10 new and five renewed Canada Research Chairs Nov. 14, representing a total research investment of $13.8 million.听The 捆绑SM社区 awards were part of $182听million in funding for the听听the government announced, to support 224听new and renewed chair holders at听post-secondary institutions across the country.听

Established in 2000 and investing approximately $311 million annually to recruit and retain world-class researchers in the fields of engineering, health sciences, humanities and social sciences, the Canada Research Chairs Program is a tri-agency initiative of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).听

There are two types of Canada Research Chairs. Tier 1 Chairs, awarded to outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields, are valued at $200,000 annually for seven years, with one opportunity for renewal. Tier 2 Chairs, valued at $120,000 annually for five years and renewable only once at a value of $100,000 annually, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field.听

The Faculty of Education is proud to announce its newest Canada Research Chairs:

  • Dr. Victoria Talwar, Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology was named as a Canada Research Chair Tier 1 (SSHRC) in Forensic Developmental Psychology.听Dr. Talwar鈥檚 innovative interdisciplinary research on children鈥檚 verbal deception, moral development and child witness competency issues has informed current debates about children鈥檚 social-cognitive development and has contributed to legal reform in Canada.
  • Dr. Marie-H茅l猫ne Pennestri, Education Associate Dean听of Research & Graduate Studies听and Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology was named as a Canada Research Chair Tier 2听(CIHR) in Pediatric Sleep.听Dr. Pennestri investigates the development of the sleep-wake cycle in infancy, in association with physical and mental health, family functioning, and parental expectations.
