捆绑SM社区, ABA co-host global aviation conference

The 捆绑SM社区 Institute of Air & Space Law and the American Bar Association will cosponsor 鈥淎ir & Space Law: A Global Perspective,鈥 a major international conference taking place September 18 and 19, at the Marriott Chateau Champlain Hotel in Montreal.

This year's conference, with an estimated 250 participants, will focus on many timely issues including passenger rights initiatives, aviation safety and security, efforts to mitigate aviation鈥檚 environmental impact, and the future of private space flight.

The event will feature a host of prominent speakers on various panels and at lunch. Speakers include Robert Sturgell, Administrator, Federal Aviation Administration; Jeffrey Shane, former Under Secretary, U.S. Department of Transportation; Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez, President, International Civil Aviation Organization; and Jim Burnley, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation. Other noteworthy speakers include Ed Stimpson, former U.S. Ambassador to ICAO; D.J. Gribbin, General Counsel, U.S. Department of Transportation; and Glen McDougall, past Director General of Transport Canada.

Programme highlights for the conference are as follows:

September 18

  • 鈥淓merging Airport Issues鈥 will examine issues such as congestion management and airline passenger charges, 10:30 鈥 11:45 a.m.
  • 鈥淐urrent Environmental Law Issues, Climate Change and Proposed Solutions鈥 will respond to the criticisms of aviation respecting its impact on the environment, as well as proposed solutions to climate change, including capping emissions, trading emission credits and a carbon tax, 1:30 鈥 2:45 p.m.
  • 鈥淎n In-Depth Review of Recent Passenger Rights Initiatives: A Step in the Right Direction, or Regulation Gone Amok鈥 will cover consumer rights legislation over airline delays, the U.S. Department of Transportation鈥檚 new rules for disabled passengers, and the challenges that arise when faced with conflicting requirements of passenger care, 2:45 鈥 4 p.m.
  • 鈥淐harting the Future of Private Human Spaceflight: Space Law Considerations and Challenges鈥 will address related environmental issues, third-party liability considerations and the application of state vs. federal law in commercial spaceflight, 4:15 鈥 5:30 p.m.

September 19

  • 鈥淰iews from the ICAO Council鈥 will feature representatives of the International Civil Aviation Organization Council discussing air safety, security and environmental issues, 8:30 鈥 9:45 a.m.
  • 鈥淕lobal Antitrust and Competition Law鈥 will include discussion on airline mergers and acquisitions, global consolidation, and the challenges of multijurisdictional antitrust investigations, 11:15 鈥 12:45 p.m.
