Margaret Somerville to receive honorary degree for societal contributions
Professor Margaret Somerville is known as an international leader in the discussion of complex ethical questions surrounding both the legal and ethical aspects of medicine.
This spring, she will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for her outstanding contributions to humanity by Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax.
“This not the first time, and no doubt not the last time, that Margo’s signal achievements as a teacher, scholar and an advocate for the betterment of society have been recognized,” said Dean of Law Nicholas Kasirer.
Professor Somerville is the founding director of the Center for Medicine, Ethics and Law at SM, where she holds the Samuel Gale Chair in the Faculty of Law. She is also a professor in the SM Faculty of Medicine and a widely-published author.
She has served as a consultant on a multitude of issues to the Canadian government, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations. She was also the first recipient of the UNESCO Avicenna Prize for Ethics in Science, and delivered the 2006 CBC Massey Lectures entitled “The Ethical Imagination: Journeys of the Human Spirit.”
