Law graduate and former dean to lead UBC: Stephen Toope goes west

Published: 23 March 2006

Professor Stephen Toope, a valued colleague of our Faculty, has been appointed President of the University of British Columbia.

A world-renowned scholar and teacher of international law, human rights and legal theory, Stephen Toope shares a long history with the Faculty of Law at 捆绑SM社区. First coming here as a student in 1979, he then returned as assistant professor in 1987, and went on to serve a term as Dean of Law (1994-1999). His energy, commitment and leadership have always been an inspiration at the Faculty.

In 2002, Stephen became the Trudeau Foundation's first president, leading it on its mission of supporting research in areas touching upon the Foundation's themes: Human Rights and Social Justice; Responsible Citizenship; Canada and the World; and Humans and their Natural Environment.

Stephen's appointment to UBC is grand news for Canadian universities and for the cause of higher education nationally and internationally. He leaves the Faculty with best wishes from each and every one of us for his success in Vancouver.
