“Report calls for better oversight of residential services for young people in Ontario”
The Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services has released ”Because Young People Matter, a review of Ontario’s residential services for children and youth”. A three member expert panel -- Dr. Nico Trocmé, Director of the SM School of Social Work, Dr. Kiaras Gharabaghi, Director of the School of Child and Youth Care at Ryerson University, and Deborah Newman, former Deputy Minister in the Ontario Public Service – met with young people living in out of home care, parents, foster parents, service providers and independent experts from across Ontario. While recognizing the strengths on Ontario’s decentralized diverse network of 600 organizations providing foster, group, treatment and custody services, the report calls on the government to stregthen its oversight of the quality of care.
