The Janus-faced challenges of biodiversity science: some initial explorations

Andy Gonzalez is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at 捆绑SM社区, he holds a tier II Canada Research Chair in Biodiversity Science and is the current Director of the Quebec Centre for Biodiversity Science. Prior to that he spent 4 years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Paris VI, France. He obtained his PhD in Biology from Imperial College, London in the UK.

His research is focused on two major themes: 1) Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in heterogeneous environments, 2) The causes and consequences of biodiversity loss and maladaptation. Through a blend of experiment and theory his research has examined how habitat fragmentation and environmental variability interact to cause species extinction, and how dispersal may mitigate these effects. He has also worked on the socioeconomic drivers of biodiversity loss and recently published work on the relationship between economic inequality and biodiversity. He has also combined experimental and theoretical approaches in ecology and evolution to understand the problem of antibiotic resistance, and evolutionary rescue in changing environments.
